The Hanns Joachim Friedrichs Award is a German award for excellence in journalism. It was first awarded in 1995. The award is named for the German journalist Hanns Joachim Friedrichs, who died in the year before the awards had established. The winners of the award are journalists who have achieved exceptional results in their work.
The jury commented, Mai Thi was very successful in making easy-to-understand scientific findings in broadcasts on television and on the Internet.
On her Facebook fanpage, Mai Thi said “What a beautiful evening. It is an honor to get Hanns Joachim Friedrichs award with Harald Lesch. And what a special sign of the jury, that this year for the first time, the award recognizes science journalism. This shows science plays a very important role in our society.”
Nguyen Kim Mai Thi was born in 1987 in Heppenheim (Germany). Her father is a chemical engineer and her mother is a nurse. From a young age, she showed her excellency at studying. Graduating from high school in 2006 with the best results, she attended college at Johannes Gutenberg Mainz and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Later she worked on a doctorate degree at the RWTH Aachen University and Harvard University.
Mai Thi excelled in the field of nano medicine for cancer treatment. In addition, she is also considered a multi-talented person who can play the piano and violin and has won the first prize at a college music competition.
