This year’s event carried the theme “5% Leading the Change - Spreading Globally,” aiming to mobilize 5% of the world’s population to take action for the environment. Research from the University of Leeds (UK) shows that when just 5% of a community commits to a shared goal, it can trigger a tipping point that transforms awareness and behavior across society.
Nguyen Thi Cam Tu, National Coordinator of Let’s Do It Vietnam, shared: “This year’s campaign carries a powerful message: you don’t need to be a celebrity or a leader to create change - simply by taking action, you are already part of the 5% pioneering group that generates a positive ripple effect in the community. Participating in cleanup activities not only helps improve the environment but also shifts behavior - from littering to becoming aware of waste sorting, reduction, and reuse.”

This year’s program welcomed the participation of Hannes Hanso, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Estonia to China, concurrently accredited to Vietnam, Mongolia, and Thailand.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Hannes Hanso said: “On behalf of Estonia - the birthplace of this global movement - I would like to sincerely thank all of you in Vietnam for contributing with passion and dedication. When millions of people carry out small actions together, we can make big changes for future generations. Let’s continue to work together for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable planet. I hope this wonderful movement will continue to grow both in Vietnam and around the world.”
In total, volunteers collected nearly 850 kilograms of waste, most of it single-use plastic, medical masks, and cigarette butts.
Before starting, volunteers received training on waste sorting, safety instructions, and were equipped with gloves, trash grabbers, and sacks to ensure both efficiency and safety during collection.

More than 300 volunteers took part in the “World Cleanup Day 2025” event along Pham Hung Street (Me Tri Ward, Hanoi). |
Nguyen Dinh Hai Lam, a final-year student at the National Economics University, shared: “I know many people still think cleaning up trash is the job of sanitation workers or environmental companies. But only when you join in yourself do you realize that every small action matters. Seeing those bags of trash being gathered together made me feel like I was contributing to something bigger than myself. Today’s event not only reminded me of my personal responsibility to the environment but also inspired me to live more consciously every day.”
This year, Let’s Do It Vietnam organized the campaign simultaneously in many cities and provinces, including Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Quy Nhon, Quang Ngai, and Can Tho. In addition, Let’s Do It Vietnam’s partners also held cleanup events in Gia Lai, Kon Tum, and many other localities nationwide. Altogether, more than 1,000 volunteers across the country participated, collecting over three tons of waste.
Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung, a second-year student at Quy Nhon University, shared: “I come from a coastal area, where I see plastic waste washing ashore every day. Joining World Cleanup Day is not just a volunteer activity but also a way for me to speak up for my hometown. Picking up trash alongside brothers, sisters, and friends made me feel like I was doing something truly meaningful - not just for the environment but also for the community where I grew up. I hope that today’s small actions will inspire many others to join hands for a greener Vietnam.”
