At the conference, delegates were briefed on the key contents of the “500-Day and Night Campaign to Accelerate the Search, Recovery, and Identification of Martyrs’ Remains,” which is oriented toward the 80th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947 - July 27, 2027). The meeting also implemented plans for collecting and handing over samples of martyrs’ remains and identifying martyrs through DNA testing.
According to a report from Steering Committee 515 of the province, a survey of 20 martyrs’ cemeteries in the area shows a total of 35,945 graves, including 35,931 single graves and 14 collective graves. Among them, 5,861 graves have full information, 13,042 graves have incomplete information, and 17,042 graves remain unidentified. To date, biological samples have been collected from 1,585 graves.
Under the plan, An Giang Province aims to complete sample collection from all unidentified graves in martyrs’ cemeteries, as well as newly discovered and recovered remains, before May 2027. In the period from July 2027 to December 2030, the province will continue collecting samples from graves with partial information but still unidentified after verification measures are completed, in accordance with regulations and guidance from the National Steering Committee 515.
To implement the task, the Provincial Steering Committee 515 has established an inter-sectoral task force and two teams responsible for collecting remains samples. Chau Phu Martyrs’ Cemetery in Vinh Thanh Trung Commune has been selected as a pilot site to carry out the collection and handover of samples, and to draw experience before scaling up across the province.
It is expected that on June 30 and July 1, relevant forces will collect 37 samples from unidentified martyrs’ graves at Chau Phu Martyrs’ Cemetery for DNA analysis.
In parallel with the collection of samples for identification purposes, An Giang Province continues to intensify efforts to search for and recover martyrs’ remains. According to the An Giang Provincial Military Command, from August 2025 to present, forces have recovered 149 sets of martyrs’ remains in both the province and Cambodia, reaching 59.6% of the target of 250 sets by the end of 2026. The province aims to recover approximately 410 sets of remains by July 2027.
Concluding the conference, Vice Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People’s Committee Le Van Phuoc, Head of Steering Committee 515 and Head of the Provincial Specialized Committee, emphasized that the implementation of the “500-Day and Night Campaign to Accelerate the Search, Recovery, and Identification of Martyrs’ Remains” is a particularly important political task, reflecting the tradition of “When drinking water, remember its source,” and the responsibility toward national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland.
He requested departments, agencies, and localities to further enhance their responsibility in communication work, review and collect information on martyrs and their graves; and closely coordinate in the process of searching, recovering, sampling, and identifying remains. Relevant units must strictly follow professional procedures, ensuring absolute accuracy in sampling, management, preservation, handover, and DNA testing, with no errors or mistakes allowed.
Provincial leaders also urged press agencies and localities to intensify communication about the purpose and significance of the campaign; mobilize the participation of the entire political system and all social strata; and call on organizations and individuals to provide information to support the search, recovery, and identification of martyrs’ remains, thereby contributing to effective implementation of the policy of “repaying gratitude” and meeting the wishes of martyrs’ families.
