Badminton Player Nguyen Hai Dang Wins First International Title in Iran
On the evening of February 4 (Vietnam time), badminton player Nguyen Hai Dang (No 97) faced Sathish Kumar Karunakaran (No 49) in the final of the International Challenge Iran Badminton Tournament 2024. Despite being 48 places behind his rival in the global rankings, the Vietnamese badminton player played exceptionally well, winning in two sets. After only 50 minutes, the Ho Chi Minh City player defeated Sathish Karunakaran 21-17, 21-18.
As a result, Dang became the first Vietnamese player to win a tournament on the BWF World Tour circuit in 2024. Thereby, Dang will win up to 4,000 additional points for the championship. This brings the total score to 19,570 in the World Badminton Federation's "Race to Paris 2024" ranking.

Dang also has an opportunity to join the group of players who qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics, as the BWF issued the most recent update to the "Race to Paris 2024" rankings on February 7. Following the competition in Iran, Dang is expected to compete in the Azerbaijan International Challenge, which will be held from February 5 to 12.
Dang is one of two male badminton players, together with Le Duc Phat who are expected to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 23-year-old badminton player will compete in several international tournaments in early 2024 to earn points, increasing prospects of obtaining a ticket to this year's Summer Olympics. Vietnamese badminton currently features female badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh, who is almost guaranteed to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
