Located at the foot of Ly Hoa pass along the coastal section of National Highway 1A, Bai Da Nhay is one of the most famous natural attractions in Vietnam’s North Central region.

Bai Da Nhay is located in Bac Trach commune, Quang Tri province, about 25km north of the centre of the Dong Hoi (new) ward. Because it lies directly beside National Highway 1A, the site is easily accessible by car or motorbike.

The most special feature of Bai Da Nhay is a natural rock formation stretching along the shoreline. Over millions of years, waves, wind, and weathering have eroded rocks of various sizes into unique shapes. Some resemble toads, some others evoke elephants, tigers, seabirds, or sails reaching towards the sea. This diversity gives every viewpoint at Bai Da Nhay a fresh and striking appearance.

The name “Da Nhay” derives from the sight of rocks rising and falling above the water. As the tide moves in and out and waves repeatedly strike the rocks, they appear to “dance” in the ocean.

Unlike many crowded tourist beaches, Bai Da Nhay remains its pristine charm, with clear blue water, golden sand, and rows of rocks extending towards the surf.

Sunrise is the favourite time of day for many visitors and photographers. As the sun gradually rises above the horizon, the first rays of daylight cast a golden glow across the rocks, creating a scene that is both majestic and poetic.

Late afternoon is when this place becomes charming. The sunset turns the sea red and reflects across rocks of different shapes, creating ideal moments for photography or simply sitting quietly and watching the ocean.

On calm days, visitors can walk along the beach, explore rock gaps and capture unique photographs. However, when climbing the rocky outcrops, visitors need to be cautious as their surfaces can become slippery, particularly after being struck by waves or during the rainy season.

Thanks to its convenient location, Bai Da Nhay is often included in itineraries exploring other attractions in the area, including Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Mooc spring, the Chay River-Dark cave and Nhat Le beach.

Many travellers stop at Bai Da Nhay in the early morning or late afternoon before continuing the journey. It is also an ideal place to rest, watch the scenery, and enjoy the fresh sea air while travelling along Vietnam’s route.

Depending on the season, menus often feature shrimp, squid, blue crab, sea fish, clams, snails,... prepared in various ways, including steaming, grilling, salt-roasting, and cooking in porridge. As the seafood is caught by local fishermen each day, it retains the distinctive freshness of Vietnam’s central coast.

Visitors may also try local specialities such as banh bot loc, banh xeo, and chao canh - specialities reflecting the central coastal region’s culinary features.

Travel tips

The best time to visit Bai Da Nhay is from around March to August, when the weather in central Vietnam is generally dry and sunny, and the sea is calm, creating favourable conditions for sightseeing and photography.

Visitors should wear shoes or sandals with good grip when walking across the rocks and avoid climbing high formations during rough seas or rainy weather. They should also protect the environment by not littering or damaging the natural rocks, thereby helping preserve the landscape.
