Over 100 delegates from 12 countries gathered in an international conference in Hanoi on Dec. 7 to discuss the accelaeration of the Women, Peace and Security agenda.

To commemorate the first year of the International Conference on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) – “Strengthening Women’s Role in Building and Sustaining Peace: From Commitments to Results” organized in Hanoi in December 2020, international practitioners on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) from around the world, political leaders, representatives of the UN Agencies in Vietnam, socio-political and women’s organizations, and the academia of Vietnam gathered once again at the international workshop “Accelerating the Implementation of Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda: the Role of the National Action Plan (NAP)” to discuss the best practices on the implementation of WPS agenda at the national level.

The event was organized by UN Women, in collaboration with Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam in Hanoi, in hybrid formats, reported VNA.

In his opening remark at the workshop, Do Hung Viet, Assistant to Foreign Minister affirmed that Vietnam attaches special importance to ensuring gender equality and advancement of women in all social aspects, and always supports and promotes issues related women, peace and security.

Vietnamese women are participating in most areas of life, he said, noting that they have joined UN peacekeeping operations in the Central African Republic and South Sudan, he said.

During its tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2008-2009, Vietnam proposed and promoted the adoption of the UNSC's Resolution 1889 on women's role in the post-conflict period.

Within ASEAN, Vietnam has actively contributed to the development of regional policy frameworks on women, peace and security, he added.

Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Rana Flowers expressed her appreciation for the leading role of Vietnam in illustrating to the world - brilliant women peacekeeping role models - who are not only valued as highly professional in their duties but who bring fresh thinking on more peaceful, and humane approaches to effectively protect those women and girls too often left at the margins, sidelined in conflicts and crisis.

Vietnam has so far sent 75 representatives, including women, to participate in peacekeeping missions in many regions of the world, she added.

However, the official also mentioned challenges that need to be addressed, including finance-related issues and budget allocation for the implementation of women, peace and security agendas.

Gaelle Demolis, Acting Country Representation of UN Women emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum and constant, inclusive dialogues with key partners and expressed her wish to continue working alongside the Government of Vietnam on this agenda for peace, equality, and inclusion.

Participants focused on discussing the role of the WPS National Action Plan (NAP) and introduce available models of NAPs, best practices and the common challenges of NAP implementation world-wide, or similarly effective and efficient WPS framework for Vietnam.

The workshop marked an effort in increasing the presence and participation of women in peace processes; advancing women's social and economic empowerment; providing financial support for and incorporating women, peace and security agenda into peacekeeping operation at all level.
