Vietnam and Finland established diplomatic relations in January 1973, marking a new chapter in their bilateral ties. The Finnish Embassy in Hanoi was opened in 1974, while the Vietnamese Embassy in Helsinki has been operating since 2005.
For many years, Finland regarded Vietnam as a priority partner in development cooperation, providing assistance in areas such as poverty reduction, education and training, and clean water supply. Over time, the relationship has evolved from development cooperation to an equal and mutually beneficial partnership. Vietnam highly values Finland’s role within the European Union (EU) and wishes to further deepen bilateral ties. In return, Finland has supported the strengthening of Vietnam-EU relations, particularly the effective implementation of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

Economic cooperation stands out as a highlight in the bilateral relationship, holding great potential for growth. Finland is renowned for its technology and innovation, while Vietnam boasts a young, abundant, and dynamic workforce, making it a promising partner in the field of high-quality labor. Bilateral investment and trade have maintained steady growth, especially in areas such as digital transformation, information and communications technology, agriculture, forestry, and renewable energy. Both sides also place emphasis on cooperation in education, science, and technology, adding new momentum to their partnership.
During Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha’s visit to Finland in November 2024, leaders from both countries agreed to enhance collaboration in the circular economy, plastic waste management, and renewable energy development. Finland highly appreciated Vietnam’s efforts in energy transition and climate change response, affirming its readiness to support Vietnam in achieving its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
People-to-people relations between the two countries continue to be strengthened. The Vietnamese community of around 16,000 people in Finland has integrated well and actively contributed to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the two nations.
After more than 50 years of diplomatic relations, Vietnam and Finland have recorded many remarkable achievements. Building on a foundation of political trust and traditional friendship, both countries are striving to elevate their partnership to a new height - for the benefit of their peoples and for peace and sustainable development worldwide.
