Friendship Association Promotes Cooperation Opportunities between Vietnam and Cambodia

The Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Association in Ho Chi Minh City agreed to further consolidate and foster friendship, solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the countries as well as between the southern economic hub and Cambodian localities.

The third congress of the Ho Chi Minh City's Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Association, term 2022-2027 on April 19 took place to review its activities in the last term and map out the plan in the new term.

The delegates listened to the summary report of the association's second term which have actively contributed to consolidating and strengthening the friendship and solidarity between the people of the two cities and the two countries.

The Vietnam–Cambodia entrepreneurs' club in HCM City has mobilized members to contribute to building stone stele on Truong Sa Island, helping to give gifts to the poor, students, and building houses in some localities.

During the 2020-2021 Covi-19 outbreak, the club donated 2,000 masks to Cambodian students, 10,000 masks and 1,000 bottles of wind oil to help the border guards of Tay Ninh province. Recently, they have gave an additional 5,000 masks to Cambodian people and 5,000 masks to Vietnamese expatriates in the third wave of Covid-19; supported the Cambodian Student Congress VND 50 million and 250 gifts, worth VND 200 million.

The club also actively participates in humanities activities for the poor in the border areas and Vietnamese-Cambodian communities in Tonle Sap Lake of Cambodia - with medicine and gifts worth hundreds of billions of dong.

The association has sponsored more than 40 children, regularly meets with Cambodian students studying in the city every 3-6 months, bringing the total number of sponsored Cambodian students in Vietnam to more than 200.

On the occasion of Chol Chnam Thmay Festival, the association sent representatives to attend and assist financially the year-end party of the Ngo Gia Tu Dormitory as well as organize for them to exchange with Vietnamese youth and students in other provinces.

The association also helped offer health check-ups and distribute medicine to more than 2,700 people, give nearly 2,600 gift packages, four wheelchairs to overseas Vietnamese and poor Cambodians in Tonle Sap Lake - Siem Reap, Ba Rai district - Kongpong Thum and Phnom Penh with a value of nearly VND 1.4 billion of Tam Viet Doctor's Union.

In addition, the Tam Viet Doctors' Union has organized more than 100 trips to distribute medicine to nearly 70,000 people, gave 35,200 gifts, provided funding for houses, water wells, supported heart surgeries, eye surgeries, donated computers, wheelchairs, financed thousands of nutritious meals, milk, rice, and health insurance cards for the poor; gave bicycles, scholarships to poor students in many southern provinces, Central Highlands, and border provinces.

In the 2022-2027 term, the association will continue to promote its strengths, overcome its weaknesses, and set specific directions to well perform the tasks set out by two countries, reflecting the motto of “good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term sustainability”.

Accordingly, the association will focus on boosting communications to raise awareness of the public, especially young people, of the bilateral friendship, promote investment and trade between Vietnamese and Cambodian enterprises, and provide effective assistance for Cambodian students in HCM City, improve the quality of charity social work and pay attention to the task of building the association.

The new executive board headed by Phung Cong Dung, chairman of the municipal Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, consists of 51 members.

Speaking at the event, Cambodian Consul General to HCM City, Sok Dareth said the city's Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Association and its municipal chapter have worked effectively to cultivate solidarity as well as counter accusations that defame and destroy the relationship between the two countries.

The Cambodian diplomat affirmed that the Consulate General is committed to coordinating with the local friendship organisation in promoting sound relations between Vietnamese and Cambodians for peace, independence and positive developments in each nation and in the region.

At the congress, the central committee of the Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Association presented the emulation flag to the HCM City's Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Association for its contributions to the association's construction and activities.

After the congress, the association will develop a full-term working program, a specific plan to effectively implement the Resolution set out by the congress for the 2022 - 2027 term.
