Torrential rains on August 17 afternoon flooded Hanoi, causing major traffic chaos and leaving low-lying areas submerged for hours.

Districts like Dong Da, Hoang Mai, Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, Hai Ba Trung, Cau Giay, Tay Ho and Bac Tu Liem experience rainfall of 20-70mm.

Most of the streets like Ly Thuong Kiet (Hoan Kiem), Bui Xuong Trach (Thanh Xuan), Vuong Thua Vu (Thanh Xuan), Tong Dan (Hoan Kiem), and Thuy Khue (Tay Ho), among others, were deep under water.

The Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said heavy rains will continue in the capital city for the next few days.

Meanwhile, in the northeastern province of Quang Ninh, torrential rains triggered widespread flooding, forcing hundreds of households to evacuate on August 16 night.

In Cao Thang ward, Ha Long city, water seeped into dozens of houses, causing property losses.

On August 17, downpours also submerged more than 3km of National Highway 18A. Water entered many homes along the route.
