Hanoi Tourism in September: Visitor Numbers Double Due to Independence Day Celebration

In September 2025, Hanoi welcomed 4.17 million visitors, marking a historic high and a 98% surge compared to the same period in 2024. The unprecedented growth is largely attributed to the vibrant festivities commemorating the 80th anniversary of Independence Day on September 2 (A80) held in the capital city.

On September 29, the Hanoi Department of Tourism announced the results of tourism activities for September 2025.

The total number of tourists to Hanoi in September 2025 is estimated at 4.17 million, marking a 98% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Among them, international visitors are estimated at 666.7 thousand, up 46.8% year-on-year. Total tourism revenue is projected at 12 trillion VND, an increase of 46.1% over the same period last year.

For the first three quarters of 2025, Hanoi welcomed an estimated 26.07 million tourists, a 23.8% rise compared to the same period in 2024. Of this figure, 5.54 million are international visitors, with the remainder being domestic tourists.

The average hotel room occupancy rate in September 2025 is estimated at 68.6%, an increase of 4.3 percentage points compared to September 2024.

As of September 16, 2025, Hanoi is home to 2,085 international travel service businesses, 568 domestic travel service businesses, 32 tourist transport enterprises, 7 representative offices of foreign travel service companies, 6,745 international tour guides, 2,507 domestic tour guides, and 158 on-site tour guides currently in operation.

The surge is primarily attributed to activities celebrating the 80th anniversary of Independence Day (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025).

Highlights include the Anniversary Ceremony, parade, and march held on the morning of September 2 at Ba Dinh Square; the exhibition “80 Years of Independence - Freedom - Happiness Journey” at the National Exhibition Fair Center in Dong Anh commune, along with music performances, fireworks displays, and various commemorative and exhibition events.

During the month, the Hanoi Department of Tourism, in coordination with Vietnam Railways Corporation, directed BHL Tourism Service Trading Joint Stock Company to launch the Hanoi 5-door train (The Hanoi Train) to serve residents and visitors.

To meet the needs of those who came to Hanoi for the anniversary, the city, particularly its tourism industry, has granted support for the people, including food and accommodation. They have established specialized websites to update information on commemorative activities, especially guidelines on how to watch the parade on the morning of September 2.

Also in September 2025, the Department of Tourism partnered with the UNESCO Hanoi Travel Club to organize a tourism development survey, foster cooperation, and initiate a campaign to protect the sustainable tourism environment in Duong Lam Ancient Village (Son Tay Ward). Additional activities included promoting tourism in India, participating in the 2025 Ho Chi Minh City International Tourism Fair, and hosting the Hanoi Beverage Festival.

Until the end of 2025, the Hanoi Department of Tourism will advise the City People's Committee on approving a project to reform the organizational model, management practices, conservation, and promotion of the special national historical relic and scenic site of the Huong Son complex (Huong Pagoda).

The department also aims to develop distinctive, high-quality tourism products tailored to market demand, such as agricultural and rural tourism, night tourism, and community-based tourism linked to traditional cultural experiences of ethnic minorities. Other initiatives include establishing Hanoi Beer Museum destinations, organizing survey programs to connect local tourist sites with travel businesses, and advancing digital transformation to boost tourism.
