Some Reflections on Implementing Ho Chi Minh’s Ideology on Vietnam’s People-to-People Diplomacy over the Past 80 Years

According to the Vietnamese Embassy in Tanzania, the Ho Chi Minh Space occupies the central and most dignified location within the Embassy grounds, where the Vietnamese community and international friends can come to admire, offer incense and flowers in memory of President Ho Chi Minh.

Its inauguration on Vietnam’s National Day adds deeper symbolic value, reaffirming the strong bonds between the people of Vietnam and Tanzania, as well as the East African region.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Tanzania Vu Thanh Huyen reflected on key milestones in Vietnam’s 80-year journey, from the historic moment President Ho Chi Minh proclaimed independence to the country’s ongoing process of renovation and global integration. She highlighted the special bond between President Ho Chi Minh and Tanzania’s founding President, Julius Nyerere, describing it as a powerful symbol of the enduring friendship between the two nations. The Ambassador affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to nurturing this valuable relationship, both now and in the future, with Tanzania in particular and East African countries in general.

Ambassador Huyen also noted that 2025 marks a pivotal year in Vietnam–Tanzania relations, with numerous significant diplomatic activities planned. It also commemorates the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Tanzania, she emphasized, is Vietnam’s oldest traditional partner in East Africa. This year also provides an opportunity to celebrate milestone anniversaries with other regional nations: 55 years with Somalia, 50 years with Burundi and Rwanda, and 30 years with Kenya.

In his remarks, Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Cosato David Chumi, extended heartfelt congratulations to the Government and people of Vietnam. He expressed deep admiration for Vietnam’s transformation, from a war-torn nation to a vibrant, globally integrated economy. The Deputy Minister underscored that the Tanzania–Vietnam partnership stands as a model of South-South cooperation, rooted in mutual trust and understanding, and voiced confidence that this relationship will continue to flourish.

As part of the event, the Vietnamese Embassy organized a photo exhibition highlighting the diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Tanzania. In collaboration with local media, a special commemorative edition was published to mark the “Double Anniversary”: 80 years of Vietnam’s National Day and 60 years of Vietnam–Tanzania diplomatic relations. The edition showcased Vietnam’s development achievements and offered Tanzanian readers and international friends deeper insight into the country and its people.

Documentary films and evocative imagery guided guests through Vietnam’s transformative journey, while also celebrating the enduring partnership between the two nations, reflected in high-level visits, joint economic initiatives, and vibrant cultural exchanges.

To conclude the ceremony, Ambassador Vu Thanh Huyen, Deputy Minister Cosato David Chumi, and other delegates planted an areca tree, an iconic symbol in Vietnamese culture, within the Embassy grounds. The gesture served as a living metaphor for the Vietnam-Tanzania relationship, which will continue to be cultivated, developed, and flourish.
