Hue City to Raise Awareness on Mine Accident Prevention

The Hue city Department of Health held a conference to introduce the project "Education on mine and explosives accident prevention for the community (RAPPORT)" on May 29.

The project aims to raise awareness, change behavior and reduce accidents related to mines and explosives in high-risk areas such as Hue city and Quang Binh province.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Director of the Hue Health Department Phan Minh Nguyet said that the RAPPORT project has practical significance for a locality affected by mines and explosives like Hue. The activities in the program not only provide the necessary skills and knowledge for the people to protect themself and their family, but also aim to continue communicating the consequences of mines and explosives to change behavior in order to build a safe community.

According to statistics at the conference, although departments and localities have made many efforts, the situation of bomb, mine and explosive contamination still affects more than 18% of the country's land area, of which Hue city is one of the most heavily affected areas with a total area of ​​bomb, mine and explosive contamination accounting for 34.4%. Currently, 97% of communes in the city are contaminated with bombs and mines, and the survey and clearance work requires a lot of time and resources to carry out.

The RAPPORT project is funded by the US Department of State, and is being implemented by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in coordination with the Health Department from 2024 to 2028 in Hue city and Quang Binh province. The goal is to support nearly 220,000 people and families in high-risk areas in these two localities to avoid bomb, mine and explosive accidents through community education activities, behavior change communication and building safe living skills.

Specifically, the project will apply social behavior change methods, promote safe and practical actions that can prevent accidents such as identifying, avoiding and reporting mines and explosives, thereby supporting local authorities in working with survey and clearance units. The content will be integrated through specialized training, communication campaigns and community activities, with materials designed to suit the needs and characteristics of each local population.

The Health Department and CRS will jointly develop interactive educational tools and training for high-risk groups such as students and residents in remote areas, contributing to supporting authorities and clearance units to improve the effectiveness of surveying and handling explosive remnants of war.

It is expected that in the coming time, the RAPPORT project will support the Vietnam National Mine Action Center (VNMAC) to complete the National Strategy on Mine and Explosive Ordnance Accident Prevention Education and enhance coordination among mine action organizations nationwide.
