On June 1^st, a delegation from Japan led by Nishikawa Koya, President of the Japanese Committee on Study of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Strategies had a working visit to the northern province of Quang Ninh and was received by provincial leaders.

During the reception, Nguyen Van Doc, the provincial Party Committee Secretary and Chairman of the provincial People’s Council, stressed that Japan is a technologically advanced country, and said he hoped Japan would continue to share experience and support for Quang Ninh province in protecting the environment, preventing climate change, sustainably developing tourism, and increasing the relationship between the province and Japan.

According to Nguyen Duc Long, Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, Quang Ninh province has seen strong development in industry, tourism, services, agriculture, forestry and fisheries. Of which, the province holds great potential in coal mining, the electrical industry and services. In addition, the province has also focused on promoting tourism development, especially in Ha Long Bay.

In 2014, Quang Ninh province attracted nearly 7.5 million tourists, including 2.5 million foreign tourists. In addition, as the province owns a wide expanse of natural coastal line of 250 kilometres in length and plentiful ecosystem, it has great potential for development, especially in fisheries and plantation.

The provincial People’s Committee Chairman said he hoped Japan would assist Quang Ninh province with technologies in production and in processing of agricultural, forestry and fishery products. He also expressed a desire to receive support from Japan in developing mangrove forests to protect the environment and climate change.

For his part, Nishikawa Koya committed to work with Japanese enterprises and the Advance International Company (AIC Vietnam) to increase cooperation programs, not only in agriculture, forestry and fisheries but also in the building of hi-tech processing foundations.

He also pledged to give technology application support for the province. Initially, the Japanese will study the resurgent plan to develop the litchi area in Dong Trieu district in an effort to meet international standards for export to Japan and other countries.

In previous years, there were 3,000-4,000 hectares of litchi area in Dong Trieu district. However, as the output of litchi was not stable, the area has been gradually narrowed to the current 1,200 hectares, whilst using the reclaimed land for other fruits that bring greater economic value and more stable consumption such as sugar apple, orange and grapefruit./.
