According to Skymet Weather, a Western Disturbance is over Jammu & Kashmir and adjoining parts of northern Pakistan. An induced cyclonic circulation is over Central Pakistan and adjoining parts of north-west Rajasthan.

A trough is extending from South Kerala to North Madhya Maharashtra across interior Karnataka. A low level trough is extending from Gangetic West Bengal to Vidarbha.

During the last 24 hours, light to moderate rain and thundershower activities occurred over Sikkim, sub–Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and isolated pockets of Nagaland.

Light to moderate rain occurred over Gangetic West Bengal, parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, isolated pockets of Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh. The weather remained almost dry over the rest part of the country.

During the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain and snow with isolated heavy spells are expected over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit Baltistan and Muzaffarabad.

Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh may receive light to moderate rain and thundershower activities with gusty winds. Isolated light rain may occur over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Day and night temperatures are expected to increase gradually over the north-west and central India.

Back-to-back western disturbances are set to impact parts of north and northwest India. Therefore, wet weather conditions are on the cards for these aforementioned regions during March 15-18. The western disturbances (WD) are mainly a weather phenomenon whose arrival is associated with snow and rain in the Himalayas and parts of northwest India.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the current active western disturbance (WD) is likely to produce scattered rainfall over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh on March 15-16. Due to the impact of this ongoing system, the IMD has placed a yellow watch over Himachal Pradesh for Monday, March 15. The advisory instructs people to ‘be aware’ of the weather situation.

Furthermore, the second western disturbance is expected to mark its presence over the Western Himalayan Region (WHR) from the night of March 16. The system is expected to bring isolated to scattered light rainfall or snowfall over Western Himalayan Region on March 17-18. Some places of the region may also experience isolated thunderstorms with lightning on March 17. Meanwhile, the other surrounding regions, which include Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi may experience isolated rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning on Thursday, March 18.

Owing to these rough weather conditions, the IMD has placed Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand under the yellow watch for March 17. Thereafter, most places of the region have been placed under this same advisory for March 18; these include Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh. Furthermore, no alerts have been issued by the met department for March 19.

As per the latest forecast, most of the other regions of India are likely to experience dry weather conditions, except the northeast. The IMD’s daily bulletin states that isolated rains along with thunderstorms are possible over some parts of northeast India for the next 48 hours (March 15-16). In addition, isolated thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching up to the speed of 40-50 kmph have been forecast over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on March 15-16.

5-Day Nationwide Forecast

According to Weather.com, parts of northeast India are set to start the week on a wet note as rains are in the forecast for the next few days. This is due to the presence of a trough and cyclonic circulation over northeast India in this forecast period. The cyclonic circulation is expected to bring scattered to fairly widespread rain or snow with lightning over Arunachal Pradesh in this period.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated rains along with thunderstorms are also likely over the rest of parts of northeast states during the same period. In addition, isolated thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds reaching up to the speed of 40-50 kmph has been forecast over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on March 15-16.

Meanwhile, a western disturbance (WD) is around Afghanistan on Monday morning. The system is likely to affect the Western Himalayan Region from Monday night. It is expected to bring scattered to fairly widespread snow or rain with lightning over Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and isolated to scattered snow or rain over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from Tuesday to Thursday.

In the southern peninsula, a trough is expected to produce isolated rain with lightning over Kerala in this period.

In terms of temperatures, the maximums are less than average over east India and adjoining area in this period. Minimum temperatures are expected to be warmer than normal across India in this period, but interior south India is near normal.

As per IMD, no heatwave is expected across the country during the next 5 days. Dry weather is likely over other areas in this forecast period.

Regional Forecast

Fairly widespread rain/snow and thunderstorms are likely over Arunachal Pradesh. Scattered rain/snow and thunderstorms are possible over Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Isolated rain/snow and thunderstorms are expected over Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Isolated rain and thunderstorm are possible over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Kerala. Maximum temperature of 40°C or more is possible over isolated place of coastal western India.
