Indian Parliamentary Leader to Visit Vietnam from April 19

Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha Om Birla will pay an official visit to Vietnam from April 19-21 which made at an invitation by NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, according to the National Assembly’s Foreign Relations Committee.

NA Chairman Hue had held talks with Speaker of the Lok Sabha (House of Representatives) of India Om Birla on Thursday during his 2021 official visit to India, reported VNS.

At the talks, the Indian lower house leader hailed the significance of NA Chairman Hue’s visit as the two countries mark the 50th anniversary of their friendship and five years of their comprehensive strategic partnership, affirming that Vietnam had a leading important role in India’s Act East Policy, and was a key partner in the Indo-Pacific vision of India.

The two legislative leaders agreed to coordinate to well organise practical and meaningful activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic relationship in 2022.

They assessed that defence-security cooperation continued to be among important pillars of the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership, which reflected the high level of trust between the two countries.

They showed joy at the rapid growth of bilateral trade and agreed to expand cooperation in such fields as energy, science-technology, sustainable development, green economy and climate change response.

The two legislative leaders showed delight at the close coordination and mutual support between the two countries at regional and international forums, UN agencies, the Non-aligned Movement and the UN Security Council, especially in 2021 when both countries are non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.

They affirmed the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, and maritime and aviation safety and freedom in the East Sea, while reiterating support for promoting dialogue, trust building, self-restraint, and the settlement of disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

They also proposed increasing cooperative activities between the two parliaments in both bilateral framework and multilateral forums.

The Lok Sabha is composed of representatives of people chosen by direct election on the basis of Universal Adult Suffrage. Maximum strength of the House is 552 members - 530 members to represent the States, 20 members to represent the Union Territories, and 2 members to be nominated by the President from the Anglo-Indian Community.

At present, the strength of the House is 543, according to information from the online portal of National Informatics Centre, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India.

Om Birla is an Indian politician and a member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is the 17th and current Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Economic and trade ties are essential pillars of the two countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership, according to VNA.

Vietnam-India bilateral trade increased rapidly from US$ 200 million in 2000 to more than US$ 13 billion in 2021, and the two countries are aiming for US$ 15 billion this year.

As of February 2022, India ranked 25th out of 140 countries and territories investing in Vietnam with 315 valid projects worth more than US$ 918 million, mainly in the processing industry, manufacturing, electricity production and distribution, and mining.

On the other hand, Vietnam had nine investment projects, mainly wholesale and retail ones, in India, whose total value exceeded US$ 6 million.
