Vietnam's path to socialism

Denis Rondepierre, member of the French Communist Party (FCP) Central Committee assessed that Vietnam's progress made in the 35 years of Doi Moi (Renovation) has shown that Vietnam's choice to follow the path towards socialism, closely linking to the reality of the country, is the right approach. Vietnam has become the fourth largest economy of ASEAN. The average poverty rate has decreased from 58% in 1993 to less than 3% in 2020. From a country with chronic food shortage, Vietnam is now not only food security but also an exporter of rice and agricultural products. The United Nations (UN) has recognized Vietnam as one of the first countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

Dr. Ruvislei González Sáez, head of the Asian team at the Cuban Center for International Policy Research, said that after 35 years of Doi Moi, Vietnam has solved the issue of food security, which is seen by many countries as a matter of national security.

Head of the Vietnamese Language Department of China Radio International (CRI), said that the Doi Moi achievements in Vietnam have proved that socialist-oriented development not only has positive economic effects but also solves social problems much better than capitalist countries with the same level of economic development.

According to him, this has not only been proven in Vietnam but also has undergone the practice of reform and opening up in China. The achievements in economic development and improvement of people's living standards in each country, especially those that are recognized by the world in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, have demonstrated the superiority of the socialist regime.

Professor, Dr. Günter Giesenfeld, a German media scientist and film director, said that Vietnam's Doi Moi was an important turning point in the post-war history in Vietnam. He stated that while carrying out the Doi Moi process, Vietnam has gradually become more comprehensively aware of socialism and the transitional period to socialism.

Kenny Coyle, a member of the International Commission of the Communist Party of Britain, emphasized that Vietnam's achievements in improving people's lives are impressive. He visited Vietnam at least 6 times between 2000-2019 and witnessed first-hand the country's rapid modernization process. He affirmed the important role of the Communist Party of Vietnam in the cause of national liberation and socialism construction, bringing a small country that was oppressed by colonialism and empire, ravaged by war, to overcome all difficulties and challenges to enter a period of stability and prosperity.

General Secretary of the Mexican Labour Party Alberto Ayana Gutiérrez said that with the Doi Moi process, Vietnam has taken energetic steps towards socialism. The industrialization of the country, the great achievements in agriculture, infrastructure, social policies have proved the correctness of the policy of national development of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Constantly strengthening position in the international arena

Jakarta Post’s senior journalist Veeramalla Anjaiah, who is also a senior researcher from the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) in Indonesia appreciated Vietnam's foreign achievements after 35 years of Doi Moi. He thinks that the Doi Moi work adopted at the 6th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam had brought the country a practical, and flexible foreign policy. Vietnam is fully integrating into the world economy with the signing of a series of free trade agreements, thereby bringing prosperity to the country.

Sharing the same view, Secretary-General of the France-Vietnam Friendship Association Jean-Pierre Archambault said Vietnam has exerted efforts to fully integrate into the international community, with its success in the election of UNSC non-permanent member as the most solid evidence. The result has proved Vietnam’s new position and the international community’s trust in its foreign policy.

Assoc. Prof of International Business Faisai Ahmed from the FORE School of Management in New Delhi said Vietnam has made remarkable progress after implementing Doi Moi, contributing to improving its international trade position, global competitiveness and role in the world economic governance.

Looking back on 35 years of implementing the Doi Moi process, our country has achieved great achievements of historical significance, strong and comprehensive development. The scale and level of the economy have been raised; the material and spiritual life of the people has improved markedly, as affirmed by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong: "Never has our country had such fortune, potential, international standing and prestige as it does today."
