Special Viet - French Photo Book Launches in Paris

According to a VNA reporter in Paris, observing the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, a special bilingual photo book was officially launched to the overseas Vietnamese public and French friends (Photo: VNA).

The highlight of the ceremony was the performance of "Tien Quan Ca" - Vietnam's National Anthem, performed by pianist Anna Kavalerova, creating a solemn and emotional atmosphere, expressing respect for the sacred values of the nation.

In her remarks, Dr. Hoang Thi Hong Ha said that the book was born from her desire to “do something meaningful to celebrate this year’s important milestone.” To her, it is not merely a personal artistic endeavor, but also a heartfelt tribute to the nation’s 80 years of heroic history, since the day President Ho Chi Minh proclaimed Vietnam’s independence at Ba Dinh Square on September 2, 1945.

Looking back on her own journey, French photographer and writer Dominique de Miscault recalled her first visit to Vietnam in 1992, when the country was cautiously opening its doors to the world following the lifting of the US embargo.

Recalling the past, French photographer and writer Dominique de Miscault said that she first visited Vietnam in 1992. During that time, the country was slowly opening up after the US lifted its embargo (Photo: VNA).

“I had a clear feeling that Vietnam was waiting for me,” said the French artist.

In the book's Foreword, there is her emotional sharing. "I was not born in Vietnam. But every time I come here, I feel like I'm returning,” she wrote.

From her first steps at the Old Quarter of Hanoi, across Long Bien Bridge, to the labor markets, she began to "listen to Vietnam with both her eyes and her heart."

Over the past three decades, she has returned to Vietnam time and again, not only for work, but also to quietly witness the country’s subtle transformations. Through her lens, she seeks to preserve the most authentic and unembellished images of Vietnam. Shunning the flashy or staged, she focuses instead on small yet profound moments, a glance, a posture, the gentle rhythm of everyday life.

"Each photo is a mirror of memory, reflecting a country that is changing every day but still preserving its soul,” she noted.

The authors recalled meeting with their coauthor in Paris on a winter afternoon. When Dr. Hoang Thi Hong Ha first saw Dominique de Miscault's photos, she realized that "a unique cultural story was conveyed in each frame."

Their collaboration goal is to create a book in which "images, emotions, and dialogues support and complement each other”, to preserve and spread the mystical, profound beauty of Vietnamese culture through the lens of art and humanity. The process of making the book took many months, from selecting photos, arranging them by theme, writing commentary, translating into two languages, to editing and publishing.

According to Dr. Hoang Thi Hong Ha, one of the challenges is that the documentary photos are quite old, so finding photos of good quality to print is not easy. They also carefully considered between artistic elements and cultural information, between image quality and simple but profound words also requires meticulousness and patience.

The biggest advantage is that both have a deep love for Vietnam, each in their own way. Photographer Dominique de Miscault loves this country as part of her innermost feeling. Meanwhile, cultural researcher Hoang Thi Hong Ha finds Dominique’s artistic view of preserving Vietnam’s fading heritage to be precious.

Through Dominique's perspective, Vietnam appears not as a tourist destination or a majestic land, but as a space of memory, simple, everyday, quiet, and profound moments.

Sharing with VNA reporters in France, the authors hope that the book will not only reach Vietnamese and French readers, but also be present in libraries, museums, and schools to become a vivid and familiar document introducing Vietnam. They especially hope to help the young French generation better understand the depth and diversity of Vietnamese culture. The book also contributes to introducing an artistic and humanistic perspective on Vietnamese culture to the international space, spreading Vietnamese culture around the world.
