Storm Goni, the 10th of its kind to enter the Bien Dong Sea (South China Sea) this year, is expected to bring heavy rains to Vietnam’s central and Central Highlands regions although it devolved into a tropical depression on October 5 afternoon.

At 4 pm on the day, the tropical depression was about 200 km off the coasts from Quang Ngai and Phu Yen provinces with maximum wind speeds of 60 kph, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

It is expected to move west-southwest at 10-15 kph and make landfall on the central provinces of Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen before devolving further into a low-pressure area.

As of 4 pm on November 6, the low-pressure area would be above the Central Highlands with maximum wind speeds of 40 kph.

Earlier the same day, the central provinces of Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa evacuated 2,178 households from areas prone to flash floods and landslides. The localities have planned to relocate over 28,000 people if needed.

By November 6 night, Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh should also expect heavy rainfall of up to 250 mm. Meanwhile, Quang Tri, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Phu Yen and northern areas of Dak Lak would experience rainfall of up to 100 mm.

Since late September, 235 people in the central region have been listed as dead or missing from storms and floods, which have also caused estimated economic losses of about VND17 trillion (US$734.36 million), according to a Government report to the National Assembly on November 2./.
