Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman Nguyen Manh Quyen affirmed that Hanoi always attaches great importance and priority to building and developing cooperative relations with localities in Germany, including the capital Berlin and Lichtenberg District.

The Vice Chairman noted that 2025 will mark an important milestone as Vietnam and Germany celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (1975-2025) and nearly 15 years of the Strategic Partnership (2011-2025). This is an opportunity for both sides to look back on the positive progress of their bilateral relations and to open new prospects for stronger cooperation in the future.

Providing information on the city’s recent administrative restructuring and streamlining, Vice Chairman Nguyen Manh Quyen said that Hanoi has recently made several administrative adjustments. Accordingly, Hoan Kiem Ward and Cua Nam Ward will continue to inherit and promote the long-standing cooperation tradition between the former Hoan Kiem District and Lichtenberg District, further fostering positive development cooperation programs.

In his discussion with the delegation about Hanoi’s socio-economic situation, Vice Chairman Nguyen Manh Quyen emphasized that the capital city is undergoing rapid development while also facing certain challenges, particularly in urban management, especially in central areas such as Hoan Kiem and Cua Nam Wards. At present, motorbikes and fossil-fuel vehicles still account for a large proportion, affecting air quality, while localized flooding during heavy rain remains an issue that requires continued attention.

To address these challenges, Hanoi is focusing on tightening urban order management and optimizing planning based on the preservation of architectural and historical values, while simultaneously developing new spaces and constructing modern infrastructure to serve residents’ needs. The city is also strongly promoting the development of its public transportation system, gradually reducing private vehicle use, and improving the overall living environment.

The Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee expressed his hope that, building on the sound foundation of cooperation between Vietnam and the Federal Republic of Germany, and given the shared goals for socio-economic development as well as local similarities, Hanoi and German localities in general, particularly Hoan Kiem Ward, Cua Nam Ward, and Lichtenberg District will continue to expand and deepen their cooperative relations in areas of mutual interest, achieving concrete results in the near future.

In response, Lichtenberg District Mayor Martin Schaefer highly appreciated the remarks shared by Hanoi’s leader. He noted that Berlin and Hanoi share many similarities and that Berlin is also striving to address challenges related to the environment, transportation, and housing development. He expressed his full agreement with the proposed cooperation directions and affirmed that Lichtenberg District will continue to maintain and strengthen its partnership with Hoan Kiem and Cua Nam Wards of Hanoi, thereby contributing to reinforcing the friendship between the two cities.

Martin Schaefer expressed his confidence that, based on the solid foundation of cooperation established over the years, the relationship between Lichtenberg District and Hanoi’s localities will continue to grow strongly in the future, bringing tangible benefits to both sides.

As part of the visit, on the afternoon of October 21 and the morning of October 22, the Lichtenberg District delegation held working sessions with the People’s Committee of Hoàn Kiếm Ward on cultural topics. During these meetings, several specific cooperation proposals were discussed, including the preservation and promotion of urban heritage values, the organization of art exhibitions, and the development of creative products inspired by heritage. The delegation also conducted field visits to several heritage sites in the Old Quarter such as the Quang Dong Assembly Hall (22 Hang Buom Street) and Kim Ngan Communal House (42 Hang Bac Street), and took part in a tò he (traditional toy figurine) making workshop. These exchange and professional interaction activities are expected to further enrich and strengthen the cooperative relationship between the two localities in the coming time.
