The main content of the Resolution recommends that the United Nations General Assembly consider launching the “International Decade for Culture for Sustainable Development” as soon as possible, with the proposed timeframe of 2027–2036.
In her statement introducing the draft Resolution, Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, emphasized that the initiative aims to further promote the vital role of culture in contributing to sustainable development at both national and global levels. It also seeks to address the complex challenges of the modern era through concrete actions to raise awareness, strengthen political will, mobilize resources, increase investment in cultural and creative industries, and foster action at all levels, thereby helping to ensure a safe and prosperous future for all.
The initiative “International Decade for Culture for Sustainable Development” has been highly appreciated by the UNESCO Director-General and member states for its alignment with the Organization’s strategies and current global priorities.
UNESCO is actively promoting the integration of culture into development policies beyond 2030, creating favorable conditions for Viet Nam to propose the initiative.
Following the adoption of the Resolution, Ernesto R. Ottone, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture, expressed his delight at the broad support of member states for Viet Nam’s initiative.

He noted that, if endorsed by the United Nations, the initiative would help further advance the integration of culture into the development agenda of the world’s largest multilateral organization in the post-2030 period.
The initiative “International Decade for Culture for Sustainable Development” represents a concrete step towards implementing the Party and State’s policies on culture and international integration in the new context.
The initiative embodies the spirit of Resolution No. 59-NQ/TW on international integration in the new context, which defines Viet Nam as an active, responsible partner that proactively contributes to shaping global strategies and policies, and stands ready to make responsible contributions to the common efforts of the international community.
According to Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, this is the first large-scale initiative proposed by Vietnam at UNESCO after many years of active participation in the Organization.
If endorsed by the United Nations, the initiative will represent a globally significant contribution bearing Vietnam’s imprint, marking an important and strategic input by Vietnam to UNESCO. It will also help advance UNESCO’s goals and reaffirm the Organization’s leading role in the field of culture worldwide.
Through the proposal of this initiative, Vietnam seeks to convey a strong message to the international community about its aspiration to join hands in building a peaceful, prosperous, and humanistic future for all humankind, based on strengthened cultural cooperation at the global level.
Once the United Nations approves the launch of the “International Decade for Culture for Sustainable Development,” UNESCO will take the lead in its implementation, in coordination with other relevant UN agencies and partners.
