The US will continue to support and accompany the central province of Quang Tri in demining, affirmed Deputy Chief of the US Mission to Vietnam Melissa Bishop, at the working session with the People's Committee of Quang Tri province within the framework of the visit and working session in Quang Tri of the US Department of State delegation on May 22.

At the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam said that in the models of demining mines and explosives, Quang Tri is considered one of the most effective models in Vietnam because it has support from the US Government. In addition to financial support, Quang Tri also receives support in technology and mine clearance techniques from specialized agencies in the United States.

The Deputy Ambassador also emphasized that successful activities and programs in Quang Tri need to be shared and replicated to other regions to create a positive spread.

At the same time, the US will continue to support and accompany Quang Tri in programs and activities to clear mines and explosives and overcome the consequences of war, and assist victims of landmines/UXO and Agent Orange in the near future.

With a very high level of damage, cluster bombs left over from the war have caused 48.3% of the accidents in Quang Tri since 1975. According to the provincial Mine Action Centre, bombs, mines, and unexploded ordnance (UXO) have caused casualties to 8,584 people since 1975, including 3,363 deaths. Among the total casualties, children under 16 years old accounted for 31%.

Quang Tri aims to become the first province in the country to be "safe" from UXO by 2025.

It also is the first province in the country to introduce bomb and mine accident prevention education into schools right from primary school and then to junior high school. About 630,000 people have accessed education programs on the risks of UXO.
