Vietnam and United States Launch Pacific Friendship 2025 in Quang Tri

On September 9 in Quang Tri, the Government of Vietnam and the US Army Pacific Command officially launched the Pacific Friendship 2025 program. This marks the first time the annual program has been held to promote cooperation in humanitarian assistance and disaster response, medical and technical collaboration, and other civil activities for the Vietnamese people, while further strengthening the long-term relationship between the United States and Vietnam.

According to the US Embassy in Vietnam, speaking at the opening ceremony, Ambassador Marc Knapper affirmed that the program is a clear demonstration of the “breadth and depth” of cooperation between the two countries.

Running from September 8 to 20, the program features a wide range of activities such as disaster response training, drone application, communications drills, sharing of expertise in explosive ordnance disposal and veterinary medicine, along with training in casualty care and classification, stroke treatment, school dentistry, and military medicine. Medial station construction and repair, as well as English exchanges, are also among the activities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Standing Vice Chairman of the Quang Tri People’s Committee Hoang Nam stressed that the year 2025 holds special significance in Vietnam-US relations as the two countries celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties. Quang Tri, once the fiercest battlefield and a symbol of division and sacrifice, now hosts the Pacific Friendship Programme 2025.

He highlighted that more than an annual international cooperation activity, the event delivers a powerful message: from a painful past, both nations are working together to build peace; from shared challenges, they are joining hands to foster development. It also inspires trust and opens up new opportunities for deeper and more sustainable cooperation between the two countries, as well as between Quang Tri and international friends.

In addition, Major General E. Darrin Cox, Commanding General of the 18th Medical Command, representing the US Army Pacific, emphasized that the program reflects a shared commitment to enhancing disaster response capabilities.

The United States has allocated USD 1.5 million for this year’s program. Since 2007, the US Department of Defense has supported over USD 39 million to build 44 schools, 28 health clinics, 12 bridges, and 12 disaster management coordination centers in 32 provinces across Vietnam, contributing to improved disaster response capacity and reinforcing bilateral cooperation.
