Vietnam successfully synthesizes anti-SARS-CoV-2 drug

The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology on June 28 announced that its Institute of Chemistry has successfully found a new method for synthesizing anti-SARS-CoV-2 drug from Favipiravir in the laboratory. The result will contribute to the joint efforts of Vietnamese scientists in researching drugs, vaccines, and biological products to serve Covid-19 prevention and control.

The research, licensing, production, and vaccination have contributed to effectively containing the spread of Covid-19. However, due to the emergence of new strains that are able to resist vaccines, antiviral drugs are an important supplement to Covid-19 vaccines. In that context, scientists of the Institute of Chemistry have successfully researched the new method for the synthesis of anti-SARS-CoV-2 drug from Favipiravir in the lab.

With an action mechanism similar to Remdesivir but it is administered orally, Favipiravir was first used against SARS-CoV-2 in Wuhan, China. This drug has importantly contributed to preventing the Covid-19 pandemic in many countries, including Italy, Japan, and Russia.

Vietnam to pilot 7-day quarantine for fully vaccinated travelers

The Ministry of Health (MoH) will pilot 7-day mandatory quarantine for fully vaccinated travelers and those who clinically recovered from Covid-19 and have negative testing results, according to a decision recently issued by the MoH. The northern province of Quang Ninh has been selected as the location for the pilot program which will take place from July 1 – 31.

The reduced quarantine time, from 21 days to seven days, is applicable to those entering Vietnam from abroad with valid certificates of full inoculation with Covid-19 vaccines. The second dose must be administered no less than 14 days and no more than 12 months prior to entry. It will also apply to people who have proof showing their full recovery from Covid-19 issued by the country where they receive treatment. The discharge date from the hospital must not exceed 12 months prior to entry.

But in both cases, they will need to have negative lab tests for the virus prior to entry and will be tested on the first day of quarantine (antigen tests) and the sixth day (RT-PCR test). They shall be subject to 7-day home-based quarantine and 14-day follow-up health observation after concentrated quarantine.

International flights to gradually resume by year-end

Regular international flights can be gradually resumed by the end of 2021 as the Covid-19 situation will improve in the second half of the year when vaccination is accelerated in Vietnam and in the world, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) said in a report sent to the Ministry of Transport.

CAAV statistics show that there are currently about 30 foreign airlines from Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and Middle East countries and France operating flights that carry diplomats, experts, investors, skilled workers, foreign students, and cargo to/from Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese airlines have used most of their fleets to operate on domestic routes with increases in both frequencies and the number of routes. The authority forecasts that the situation in 2021 will improve compared to 2020, especially in many key markets of Vietnamese aviation such as Northeast Asia and Europe. The herd immunity, driven by large-scale vaccination, will serve as a basis for gradually reopening international passenger flights at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2021.
