Representatives on behalf of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence presided over a ceremony to give medical supplies to Laos on the morning of May 3, in a bid to assist the country in its battle against Covid-19.
Major General Nguyen Hung Thang, deputy director and chief of staff of the General Department of Logistics, attended the ceremony at Cau Treo (Ha Tinh) - Nam Phao (Bolikhamxay) International Border Gate.

On behalf of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence, Major General Nguyen Hung Thang handed over gifts to Lieutenant General Khamphet Sinanone, director of the Lao General Department of Logistics, including 105,000 face masks, 500 kg of Cloramin B, 5,000 sets of protective clothing, 1,000 bottles of antiseptic solution, 1,000 rapid test kits for SARS-CoV-2 and 100 portable thermometers, worth a total of about 3 billion VND (129,798 U.S dollars).
In addition, the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence also dispatched four experts on Covid-19 prevention and control led by Dr. Le Van Dong, director of the Institute of Military Preventive Medicine, to support Laos in its fight against Covid-19.
“With a team of experienced experts, we will assist Laos with treatment, testing and resuscitation which the country is now really in need,” said Major General Nguyen Hung Thang, expressing his hope that Laos would soon stamp out the epidemic.
Lieutenant General Khamphet Sinanone thanked the Vietnamese People’s Army for its timely support, adding that this was a "vivid demonstration of special friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two Parties, States and People’s Armies of the two countries."
Previously, on the afternoon of April 29, at the Cau Treo International Border Gate, the People's Committee of Huong Son District and the Border station of Cau Treo International Border Gate (Ha Tinh Border Guard) handed over Covid-19 medical equipment and supplies to Khamkeut District, Blykhamxay Province, Laos.
Huong Son District (Ha Tinh) presented 5,000 medical masks, three hand sanitisers and 90 sets of medical protective clothes to Khamkeut District to help it in the Covid-19 fight.
Central Quang Binh Province also gifted Covid-19 medical equipment and supplies worth 2 billion VND (86,337 U.S. dollars) to Khammuane Province.
The donation included oxygen generators, thermometers, medical masks and protective clothes, etc.
The Vietnamese Association in Laos’ Oudomsay Province donated a total of 135 million LAK (14,363 U.S. dollars) worth of Covid-19 relief supplies and cash on April 29 to help local authorities fight the pandemic.
The supplies included 600 boxes of instant noodles and 55,000 medical masks, worth a total of 70 million LAK. The donation was handed over to Oudomsay Governor Bounkhong Lachiemphong.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent a letter to Lao Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh on April 30 to inquire about the Covid-19 pandemic in the country and to announce emergency support of 500,000 U.S. dollars to help Laos in coping with the outbreak of the pandemic in the community.
In the letter, PM Pham Minh Chinh said he valued the drastic anti-pandemic measures that the Government of Laos has taken while expressing his deep sympathy in regard to the difficulties and challenges that it was facing.
PM Pham Minh Chinh also expressed his belief that, under the direction of PM Phankham Viphavanh, the determination of the authorities and the entirety of the people, Laos would soon be able to take control of the pandemic and restore socio-economic development.
