Vietnam Thanks Cambodia for Aid in Covid-19 Combat

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has thanked the Cambodian Government and people for their assistance to Ho Chi Minh City that is being hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a letter to his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen on July 19, the Vietnamese Government leader said such practical and timely assistance has effectively contributed to pandemic prevention and control in HCM City and Vietnam as well.

The support is even more precious in the context of the Cambodian Government and people making efforts to combat the pandemic, he said, adding that it demonstrates the friendship, solidarity and noble tradition of mutual support between the two nations, especially during hard times.

In the letter, PM Chinh also thanked the Cambodian PM and Government for their care for the community of Vietnamese and Cambodians of Vietnamese origin while implementing Covid-19 response measures.

The leader said he believes that with resolve and coordination between the two governments and public support, Vietnam and Cambodia will soon ward off the pandemic, quickly recover their economy and resume sustainable development.

PM Hun Sen announced the donations to HCM City on July 17, which include 1 million medical masks, 100,000 N95 masks, 100 oxygen generators and US$ 200,000.

The Cambodian Red Cross Society and the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Association each presented US$100,000 to the southern metropolis.

A flight transporting the medical supplies arrived at Tan Son Nhat airport in HCM City on July 19. Youk Sambath, Secretary of State under the Cambodian Ministry of Health handed over the aid to Vice Chairman of HCM City People’s Committee Duong Anh Duc.

This is the first time the Cambodian Government has donated money to a foreign country in the Covid-19 fight, and was made given the range of difficulties caused by the pandemic in Vietnam.

Earlier, Cambodia presented medical support to Laos, Myanmar, East Timor and Nepal to aid them in their coronavirus battles.

Cambodia’s donations aim to contribute to Vietnam’s anti-pandemic efforts, particularly with cases in Ho Chi Minh City and other southern localities rising steadily over the past few days. The support has also demonstrated the spirit of friendship and close cooperation among neighboring countries in the pandemic fight, PM Hun Sen said.

Vietnam and Cambodia have proven their friendship and solidarity in the face of the pandemic.

Last April when Cambodia was battling its worst outbreak since the beginning of the pandemic, Vietnam gifted US$ 200,000 to the country with the hope that Cambodia would contain the pandemic, stabilise and see economic recovery.

In a thank-you letter to Vietnamese leaders, Hun Sen said the generous contribution amid Cambodia’s third community outbreak of Covid-19 demonstrated Vietnam’s spirit of good neighbourliness towards Cambodia in times of need.

In April last year, the Vietnamese Government also presented an aid package to Cambodia worth more than VND 7 billion (US$ 303,500) that included protective suits, face masks and Covid-19 test kits./.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Health announced 2,635 Covid-19 community transmissions in 27 localities on July 20 night, with most recorded in HCM City, raising the day's tally to 4,789 cases.

The southern metropolis reported 1,803 cases of the night tally, followed by its two neighbors Binh Duong (422) and Dong Nai (82).

The Central Highlands of Kon Tum has for the first time recorded community infections since the beginning of the ongoing wave.

July 20’s infection tally is the highest number ever in Vietnam, after 5,887 two days earlier. Of the day's cases, 728 are still being contact traced./.
