As reported by Vietnamnet, the infant weighs 3.8 kg and was prematurely-born on week 36th. His vitals were stable and no abnormalities were detected. To prevent any possible nCoV infection, the infant was separated from his mother at birth. He is currently kept in a private room and bottle-fed by doctors and nurses.
“Though breast milk is the best for the child, however, since the mother is infected with nCoV, we must bottle-feed the baby boy”, Dr. Hoang Tuan Thanh, working at the Paediatrics Department, National Hospital for Tropical Diseases said.
Earlier at 6 am September 10, the 30-year-old expecting mother went into labor while being treated for COVID-19 at Nam Dinh General Hospital. She was then transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases where she was put into a separate room for fear of cross-infecting non-COVID-19 patients. With the help of one obstetrician and one midwife, the natural delivery was a success.

Hoang Thi Hang, the midwife in charge of the delivery, said “Putting on all the protective gear throughout hours of delivery was quite hot and difficult to breathe. However, as we had experienced with two suspected COVID-19 cases before, we were fine with those difficulties”.
Tran Thuong Viet, head of the hospital’s obstetrics department, told VNE that the hospital has prepared for her birth for three weeks now. The doctors and nurses who assisted with the birth were quarantined for 14 days right after delivery, he confirmed.
This isn’t the first time a Covid-19 patient has given birth while still in treatment. Last month, a 35-year-old woman with Covid-19 gave birth to a baby girl at the Hoa Vang Field Hospital in central Da Nang City.
Vietnam has recorded 1,059 Covid-19 cases so far, 131 still active. The country has recorded no new local transmissions for a week.
