A Life Changed by a Flock of Ducks
After losing her husband to illness and having no farmland, Le Thi Linh* (Thanh Hoa Province) struggled alone to raise her three young children in a dilapidated house. For years, she lived in hardship, constantly worried about every meal, every notebook, every set of clothes for her children.
In May 2025, a turning point came when her family received 100 Mavin ducklings along with feed, veterinary medicine, and training in value chain-based farming techniques through a program jointly implemented by World Vision International in Vietnam and Mavin Group. After 50 days, she sold the flock and earned 11.5 million VND - the largest amount of money her family had ever received.

With this profit, Linh continued raising chickens and ducks, invested in a sugarcane press, and started making syrup, opening up new livelihood opportunities. At the start of the new school year, she was able to buy new books and clothes for her three children. Her eldest daughter, Thu, happily shared: “This summer I was so happy to help my mom take care of the ducks. Mom promised to buy me a new bicycle for school.”
Linh also actively participates in community training sessions, while her children benefit from children’s clubs. She shared: “The most valuable thing is not just the ducklings but the knowledge and confidence to change our lives.”

Not only Linh’s family but 232 other poor households in Quan Hoa, Nhu Xuan, and Thuong Xuan districts (former Thanh Hoa Province) also received high-quality ducklings (80-100 per household). The ducklings were pre-brooded to three days old, suited to local conditions to reduce losses and improve productivity.
Before receiving the ducklings, households underwent field assessments and were trained in biosecure farming techniques: building proper barns, brooding methods, care and disease prevention by stage, proper feed usage, and farm sanitation. They were also provided feed and veterinary medicine until the ducks reached 30 days of age.
Throughout the entire farming process, staff from World Vision International in Vietnam and Mavin technicians provided close on-site guidance on flock management, risk handling, and market connections. This is what makes the model unique - it does not merely give tools but accompanies farmers every step of the way, helping them gradually master techniques and achieve sustainable economic development.
A Sustainable Livelihood Model
Launched in 2018, the value chain-based duck farming model implemented by World Vision International in Vietnam in cooperation with Mavin Group has provided stable livelihoods for nearly 900 poor households in Thanh Hoa, with a total support budget of over 6 billion VND. The model not only helps households escape poverty sustainably but also transforms agricultural production mindsets, encouraging farmers to take ownership of techniques and rise by leveraging the strength of their communities.
Initially, commercial duck farming was a new field in the region, and locals were unfamiliar with Mavin ducks. However, thanks to close technical support, farmers gradually mastered key skills such as building biosecure barns, preventing disease, and caring for ducklings. The Mavin duck breed also proved highly advantageous: short growth period (ready for sale in just 45 days), high lean meat ratio (up to 75%), no need for ponds, and guaranteed stable purchasing prices directly from traders.

Building on this foundation, World Vision International in Vietnam and Mavin Group signed a cooperation agreement for 2025–2029, aiming to improve livelihoods and enhance nutrition for vulnerable households through sustainable farming models. Over the next five years, Mavin will work with farmers in World Vision area programs in Dien Bien, Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai, with a total projected budget of 300,000 USD (approximately 7.9 billion VND).
David John Whitehead, Chairman of the Board of Mavin Group, affirmed: “The partnership between Mavin and World Vision International began as a small livelihood project but has now evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership. This memorandum of understanding lays the foundation for at least five more years of collaboration and opens up many opportunities for long-term cooperation in the future.”
Doseba Sinay, National Director of World Vision International in Vietnam, emphasized: “We believe that sustainable change only truly happens when communities are given opportunities and knowledge to grow on their own. Our cooperation with Mavin goes beyond farming - it is about giving trust and hope for a future where parents can provide for their children and where every child can attend school and break free from poverty. We are committed to continuing this partnership, harnessing the internal strengths and immense potential of every family.”
