The 18th Vesak was held on June 1 in a solemn atmosphere at the Royal Buddhist University of Thailand (Ayutthaya, Thailand), to emphasize the contributions of Buddhism in responding to global problems.

More than 3,000 delegates attended the ceremony. They are monks and nuns from many countries and regions, together with diplomats and representatives of international organizations in Thailand.

There were 80 Vietnamese delegates attended the ceremony, including Most Venerable Thich Thien Tam, Most Venerable Thich Vien Minh, Most Venerable Dao Nhu, Venerable Thich Nhat Tu, and Dr. Le Manh That.

At the opening ceremony, Most Venerable Phra Brahmapundit, Founding Chairman of the International Organizing Committee for the International Council for Day of Vesak (ICDV) and the International Association of Buddhist Universities (IABU) talked about the history of Vesak. He said thanks to the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, the solidarity and friendship of all sects of Buddhism around the world has been increasingly consolidated.

Regarding the theme of "Buddhist wisdom to deal with global problems", Most Venerable Phra Brahmapundit said this year's celebration would discuss the orientations of Buddhism's contribution in responding to global challenges.

“We have learned a lot, especially from experience in pandemic response. Now it is time for us to work together to solve a series of difficulties and look forward to the solidarity and common prosperity of humanity,” said the Venerable.

According to Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Vesak Day is an opportunity for Buddhist monks and nuns to deliver respects on the occasion of Buddha Shakyamuni's birthday. at the same time affirming the spirit of solidarity, harmony, and mutual development of Buddhism in countries and territories around the world.

The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka emphasized that, after three difficult years during the Covid-19 pandemic, now is the time for the Buddhist community to act together toward a united and prosperous world.

“The International Council for Day of Vesak is a testament to the council's deep understanding of how theBuddhist community is coming together to respond to today's challenges and set directions with new measures to build the future. All of us here understand that wise Buddhists will act together in implementing sustainable development goals, change society in a positive way, respond to climate change and protect the environment, build healthy lives, raise trust, and promote the resolution of social conflicts,” said the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

Within the framework of the ceremony, academic forums were held, including 'Buddhist wisdom to achieve world peace', 'Buddhist advice to cope with climate change', and 'Contribution of Buddhism to social and humanitarian development after the Covid-19 pandemic'.

Accoridng to ICD, on June 2, high-ranking delegates from countries and territories participated in activities at the Council headquarters in Thailand, in which Privy Council President Surayuth Chunalont will represent the King of Thailand to carry out the ceremonies.
