According to VOV, 22 Vietnamese students from secondary and high schools outperformed 3,500 contestants from 21 Asian countries and territories to win awards at the 2025 Asia International Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO), recently held in Japan. What surprised both the organizers and other international teams was that, despite having the smallest delegation, 100% of the Vietnamese participants received awards.
Bui Van Phuong, Chairman of the Board of Tien Phong Company and Head of the Vietnam Delegation to AIMO 2025, stated that all 22 Vietnamese contestants received awards. Among them was one of the nine special Champion titles awarded across Asia. In addition, the Vietnamese team brought home 10 Gold Medals, 7 Silver Medals, and 4 Bronze Medals. Bui Van Phuong emphasized that this was an exceptional achievement, far exceeding expectations.

Sharing his feelings about the prestigious achievement, Phan Thanh Huy, an 11th-grade student from Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted and winner of the Champion title, said: “At first, I only aimed to win a high-ranking prize. I didn’t expect to achieve the highest award. I was surprised and happy.”
Tran Son Ha, a 6th-grade student from Dang Thai Mai Secondary School in the former city of Vinh, who won a gold medal, shared: “The exam was difficult, and I felt nervous. After the test, when I found out I had won a gold medal, it made me very overwhelmed and emotional.”
This year’s organizers also highly praised the abilities of the Vietnamese contestants, noting that this marks a promising starting point for young Vietnamese talents to continue shining on the global mathematics stage in the future.
Held annually since 2012 by the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad Union, AIMO is a prestigious English-language mathematics competition, drawing participants from over 20 countries and territories, including China, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Iran, and India. Its three-part exams test mathematical knowledge, logical reasoning, and academic English skills, challenging students to think critically and creatively. One significant feature of AIMO is that the exam is entirely in English and divided into three parts with increasing difficulty, requiring candidates to not only master mathematical knowledge but also know how to analyze, debate, and explain problems using logical thinking and academic language. Vietnam joined AIMO in 2019 and quickly asserted its position with hundreds of medals. According to statistics, Vietnamese students have won more than 200 international medals in AIMO. |
