Australia Hands Over US $240,000 Equipment Package to Vietnamese Peacekeepers

The handover ceremony took place on August 12 in Hanoi. At the event, the Australian Ministry of Defense handed over a package of supplies and equipment worth the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department, to improve the capacity to train and deploy forces in United Nations (UN) missions.

This event took place within the framework of the 8th Vietnam-Australia Defense Policy Dialogue, demonstrating the depth of cooperation and long-term commitment to companionship between the two countries in the field of peacekeeping.

Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien (Member of the Party Central Committee, Member of the Standing Committee of the Central Military Commission, Deputy Minister of National Defense, Head of the Interdisciplinary Working Group, Head of the Steering Committee of the Ministry of National Defense on Participation in UN Peacekeeping Activities) together with Deputy Secretary-General of Australian Defense Hugh Jeffrey co-chaired the event.

The package includes 2 Toyota Hilux 4x4 vehicles, 1 Changlin GD555 tire leveler, 10 shoulder bags, 100 personal care kits for women and 300 sets for men. The package will serve training, capacity building, support the organization of training, exercises, seminars and international professional exchanges at the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department.

In his remarks, Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien expressed his gratitude to the Government and the Australian Department of Defense for their valuable support. He stressed that this is a testament to good defense cooperation and contributing to the common goal of the United Nations. Also, he acknowledged Australia, the only country to have signed a government-level Peacekeeping Partnership Agreement with Vietnam (March 2024), and the country’s effective support in foreign language training, exchanges, and transportation of troops and equipment.

Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien hopes Australia will continue the support for Vietnam in the coming time, especially in coaching and training, improving equipment for capacity building and promoting the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. Also, Australia’s sharing experiences in deploying female soldiers, ensuring logistics and health; study and establish a mechanism for co-organizing peacekeeping exercises in rotation in each country is highly appreciated.

On the other hand, Australian Deputy Secretary General for Defense Hugh Jeffrey highly appreciated Vietnam's contribution to peacekeeping operations, affirming that Australia will continue to prioritize support in line with Vietnam's needs, especially in foreign language training, health, and capacity building.

After nearly 11 years of participating in the UN peacekeeping force, Vietnam has sent nearly 1,100 military personnel to three missions in the Central African Republic, South Sudan and Abyei; deployed 3 Engineer Teams, 6 Level 2 Field Hospitals, maintaining a female soldier ratio of more than 16%.
