"For the Sea and Islands of the Homeland" Contest Award Ceremony Held in Europe

The contest is the opportunity for overseas Vietnamese communities to show their love and attachment to the homeland, especially the sea and islands and to raise awareness of protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands.

On the evening of June 29 (local time) in Berlin (Germany), the Vietnamese Liaison Committee in Europe "For the Sea and Islands of Vietnam" held the award ceremony of the writing and drawing contest "For the sea and islands of the homeland".

Many members of Truong Sa, Hoang Sa Clubs, Vietnam Sea and Island Lover Clubs... in the Federal Republic of Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Belgium attended the event.

The contest promotes the spirit of artistic and cultural creativity in the Vietnamese community overseas, said the organizing committee. After 5 months of launching, many poems, prose, and paintings were submitted.

According to the Jury, the contestants have expressed the depth of national culture and national pride in their works. There is a vision and spirit of innovation in spreading the love of the homeland, sea and islands to the overseas Vietnamese community. It can be considered a valuable initiative in culture, history and education, especially for the young generation of overseas Vietnamese.

On the other hand, the contest is an effective bridge between Vietnamese people in many countries, contributing to building a united overseas community towards the roots.

Regarding the promotion activities for the contest, Bui Thi Thu Minh, Head of the Vietnamese Liaison Committee in Europe, President of Truong Sa Club in Germany, noted that the contest was introduced to the overseas Vietnamese community via several events. Some highlights are distributing materials, presenting and interacting directly at Avo Vietnamese Language School with students and parents and online posts on community communication platforms.

At the award ceremony, the three First Prizes (without Special Prizes) winners were announced. For prose format, the winner is "Grandpa's suitcase" by Do Khanh Linh (17 years old, Israeli resident). For poetry format, the winner is "Island Soldiers" by Pham Tuan Anh (Polish resident). For the painting format, "The Sea and Islands of Vietnam" by Nguyen Duy Dat won First Prize. Each awardee received EUR 500.

Three Third Prizes, three Second Prizes, and 23 Consolation Prizes were awarded at the ceremony.

Awardee Nguyen Duy Dat donated the painting "The Sea and Islands of Vietnam" for auction right after the award ceremony. The profit from that auction of the painting were transferred to the Truong Sa Charity Fund of the Truong Sa Club in Germany, as gifts to the families of soldiers working on remote islands.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Germany Vu Quang Minh stressed that the contest is a meaningful initiative, an invaluable spiritual gift to Navy soldiers. It has helped nurture patriotism, national pride, and a sense of responsibility for the young generation of Vietnam toward the homeland and sovereignty of the sea and islands.

He also considered the contest a practical activity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Germany diplomatic relations. The Ambassador also emphasized the importance of further tightening the Vietnam-Germany strategic partnership and bilateral defense cooperation in safeguarding peace, security, and development in the region.

The Vietnamese Liaison Committee in Europe "For Vietnam's Sea and Islands" was established in July 2022. Its outstanding achievements since its establishment are hosting two scientific conferences on the South China Sea and Vietnam's sovereignty in June 2023 in Paris, and May 2024 in Warsaw, Poland.
