The fifth Overseas Vietnamese World Golf Championship kicked off in Quang Nam province on January 4, attracting 150 expatriates from 15 countries and territories.

From January 4 to January 6, the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (under Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and the Overseas Vietnamese Golf Association cooperated to organize the Overseas Vietnamese Golf Tournament Worldwide (OVGA) at Vinpearl Resort & Golf Nam Hoi An.

OVGA 2023 was a sporting event, opening a series of activities for overseas Vietnamese within the framework of the “Xuan Que Huong” (Homeland Spring) 2023, with the participation of nearly 150 expatriates from 15 countries (UK, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, USA, Russia, Japan, France, Czech, Australia and Angola).

After three days of intense competition, at the closing ceremony on the evening of January 6, 26 golfers won singles and individual technical prizes, and four groups earned awards for team tournaments.

The OVGA 2023 trophy was awarded to Team EU and other regions, the team with the highest overall team performance.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Ngo Huong Nam, vice chairman of the State Commission on Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, head of the organizing committee, thanked the expatriate golfers for their enthusiastic participation in the tournament as well as other activities, connecting the Vietnamese community around the world, towards the Homeland Spring 2023.

The tourney, the fifth of its kind, gives participants a chance to not only share their passion of the sport but also find friends and partners.

Also on this occasion, the Overseas Vietnamese Golf Association donated nearly VND 250 million (USD 10.600) for disadvantaged children to the Quang Nam Provincial Charity Association.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Ngo The Hao, chairman of the Vietnam Golf Association in Europe, emphasized that this charity activity contributes to making OVGA more practical, showing the spirit of the event. the affection of the overseas Vietnamese golf community towards the homeland and the country. Therefore, golfers should continue to maintain volunteer activities associated with the OVGA in the following seasons, especially towards disadvantaged children who need attention and encouragement.

OVGA is a sports event held every two years since 2015, part of a series of side events of the Homeland Spring program for expatriates, the biggest external and cultural event held for overseas Vietnamese on the occasion of the Lunar New Year festival, hosted by Foreign Ministry, several agencies and localities.

It is expected that the next tournament will be held in 2025.

The annual “Xuan Que Huong” will take place in Hanoi on January 14, with about 3,000 people taking part, including 1,000 overseas Vietnamese, according to VNA.

As part of the programme, traditional activities will be held such as incense offering, release of carps, tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum, meetings with Party and State leaders, and Vietnamese cuisine festival.

The State President will extend New Year wishes to participants during a music show which will be broadcast live on the national Vietnam Television.

Its sideline activities will begin from January 13, including a workshop on legal regulations for them, a meeting honouring outstanding OVs, a spring fair with trade, investment and tourism promotion activities in Hanoi, an exchange at the national radio The Voice of Vietnam, and release of carps at Ao Sen based in Thang Long Imperial Citadel which will be hosted by the President.
