The administration of Ho Chi Minh City held a get-together on January 6 to celebrate the Lunar New Year festival, known locally as Tet, for approximately 1,600 overseas Vietnamese returning home from all over the world, VOV reported.

Addressing the event, Nguyen Van Dung, vice chairman of the HCM City municipal People’s Council, noted the city respects and highly appreciates the valuable contributions that Vietnamese expatriates have made to the city and Vietnam in general over the years.

He expressed hope that the expats would continue to promote the tradition of patriotism and unite with the locality to fulfil all socio-economic tasks ahead in the new year.

The municipal officials also listened to and answered questions related to the city’s development policies raised by overseas Vietnamese delegates.

They also rewarded overseas Vietnamese collectives, individuals, and enterprises who have made excellent achievements in 2022 to HCM City’s socio-economic development.

Early in the morning, the delegation paid a floral tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at the President Ho Chi Minh Monument and offered incense to the great leader at the Ho Chi Minh Museum’s branch in the city.

During the two-day event, delegates are scheduled to tour around various river tourism destinations, historical relic sites, and visit policy beneficiary families.

They will also attend a theatrical program celebrating the 55th anniversary of the 1968 Spring General Offensive and Uprising – a rehearsal for the total victory of the Ho Chi Minh campaign liberating southern Vietnam and reunifying the nation in April 1974.

On January 7, the city held a get-together for outstanding overseas Vietnamese who return home to welcome Vietnam’s biggest national festival, according to VNA.

Affirming that the city’s leaders always have special affection and respect for the overseas Vietnamese community, Vice Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Nguyen Van Hieu thanked them for their contributions, especially during the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Remittances sent by Vietnamese people abroad have supplemented resources for the city to effectively implement socio-economic development activities and ensure social welfare, said Hieu.

Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Vo Van Hoan stated that during its construction and development process, the city hopes to continue receiving contributions and investments from overseas Vietnamese.

Ho Chi Minh City always welcomes and is willing to create all favorable conditions for the overseas Vietnamese community to invest, do business, and make practical contributions to the city's development, especially in such fields as health, education, and physical training sports.

The delegation also stopped by tourist attractions on the river, then visited and presented gifts to the 125th Navy Brigade. Here, the delegation stopped to offer incense at the monument of “the No Number Naval Ships” and meet with soldiers on board, plo.vn reported.

Many delegates also expressed their desire to contribute additional support to improve the quality of life for the soldiers who guard the sacred national sovereignty day and night.

Pham Thi Minh Lien, an expatriate in Japan, was extremely proud and excited when this was the first time she could visit and learn about the lives of soldiers in the 125th Brigade.

“I feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to visit such sacred sites. Thanks to that, I love the city more and have more motivation to continue dedicating and helping my Vietnamese compatriots in difficulties in Japan. I hope the city will continue to grow richer, stronger and more beautiful in the future,” said Lien.

As for Ly Thua Vinh, the 28th generation descendant of King Ly Thai To, although born and raised in the Republic of Korea, he always looks to the motherland.

“My work and family are both in Korea, but I often return to Vietnam to visit relatives. Every time I return to Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City changes remarkably, many constructions are built, traffic is bustling and full of life. Although there are still many difficulties, I am sure that in the next few years, this place will be one of the most modern cities of the region and the world,” Vinh shared.
