Hundreds of teachers, researchers, representatives of associations, and individuals dedicated to Vietnamese language education attended the forum “Preserving the Vietnamese Language and Culture Abroad,” held on June 21 at the Vietnam Cultural Center in France.

The event was organized to mark the fifth anniversary of the Global Network for Teaching Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Culture.

Held in a hybrid format combining in-person and online participation, the forum brought together nearly 50 delegates from various European countries, including France, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and Ukraine, along with hundreds of online participants from Vietnam and many other countries around the world.

The program provided an opportunity for teachers, scholars, and representatives of overseas Vietnamese communities to exchange experiences, share operational models, and seek solutions to improve the quality of Vietnamese language teaching in the context of international integration and digital transformation.

Speaking at the forum, Dinh Ngoc Duc, Director of the Vietnam Cultural Center in France, emphasized that the Vietnamese language and culture are invaluable spiritual assets of the nation.

According to him, the mother tongue is not only a means of communication but also a bond connecting overseas Vietnamese communities with their homeland, families, and national roots. He stressed the need to continue innovating teaching methods and expanding cultural activities to help younger generations born and raised abroad improve their Vietnamese language skills and gain a deeper understanding of their national identity.

Speaking to Vietnam News Agency (VNA) correspondents, Le Xuan Lam, Head of the Organizing Committee of the Forum on Preserving the Vietnamese Language and Culture Abroad, said that over the past five years, the network has maintained a wide range of activities, including online exchanges, roundtable discussions, seminars, and professional workshops involving teachers, experts, and researchers both in Vietnam and abroad.

According to Lam, one of the greatest challenges today is encouraging parents to take a greater interest in their children's Vietnamese language education. In addition, financial constraints have significantly affected the maintenance and expansion of activities. He expressed his hope for greater support from relevant authorities and experts to help the forum continue developing in the coming years.

From the perspective of a language educator, Le Thi Bich Huong, a Vietnamese language lecturer at Ca’ Foscari University in Italy, noted that teaching Vietnamese abroad faces many challenges because learners often lack an environment in which to use the language regularly and must compete with numerous other foreign languages.

According to her, attracting learners requires teachers not only to teach the language but also to convey Vietnamese culture, helping students develop an appreciation for Vietnam and its people. Huong noted that many students continue to participate in Vietnamese cultural activities even after graduation, demonstrating that the Vietnamese language serves as an effective bridge between peoples.

Also speaking at the forum, Hoang Thi Hong Ha, the 2025 Vietnamese Language Ambassador, highly appreciated the network’s role in connecting Vietnamese language centers and classes across many countries.

According to her, sharing teaching experience, learning materials, and initiatives for preserving the Vietnamese language provides an important foundation for helping younger generations abroad maintain their mother tongue and their connection to their homeland.

Representing the younger generation, Dang Thao Phuong, a student at Lac Long Quan Vietnamese Language School in Warsaw, Poland, said she has been studying Vietnamese for five years and was delighted to participate in the forum’s activities. For her, learning Vietnamese not only helps deepen her understanding of the language but also strengthens her connection to Vietnamese culture and national roots.

Delegates agreed that, in the context of globalization, strengthening connections among Vietnamese language centers, developing shared learning materials, training teachers, and applying technology in teaching will contribute to improving the effectiveness of preserving and promoting the Vietnamese language within overseas Vietnamese communities.

After five years of operation, the Global Network for Teaching Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Culture continues to affirm its role as a bridge, helping spread the Vietnamese language and promote Vietnamese culture to international friends.
