On the morning of November 11, due to the upstream flooding and heavy rains caused by Storm Etau, many streets in Hoi An Ancient Town such as Bach Dang, Nguyen Phuc Chu, and Cong Nu Ngoc Hoa streets were submerged underwater 1m, VNExpress reported.

Nguyen Thai Hoc and streets along the Hoai River were deluged underwater 50 cm. The local authorities erected barriers and warning signs to prevent residents and vehicles from entering the flooded areas. Many people chose to travel by boat.

“Since early October, I have placed all my valuable properties out of the water's reach”, said Nguyen Thi Quyen, the owner of a shop on Bach Dang street, adding that over the past week, floodwaters have swelled up twice.

Nguyen The Hung, Vice Chairman of the town said that the floodwaters reached 1.72 m and are likely to rise further due to the incoming heavy rains.

“This is the first time during the past 45 years that Hoi An has experienced six floods, one storm and two tropical depressions within only a month”, Hung added.

| Etau is the second storm to hit Vietnam in November. At least two people in Quang Nam and Binh Dinh Provinces have been killed by the storm. The previous month, the central region suffered four storms and one tropical depression. 159 people were dead and 71 are still reported missing. Meanwhile, another storm, Vamco has formed off the Philippines’ Luzon Island and is expected to enter the Bien Dong Sea (South China Sea) on Thursday. |
