Honoring President Ho Chi Minh’s Legacy in France

On June 27, in Montreuil, France, the Ho Chi Minh Relic Site at the Presidential Palace, in coordination with the Embassy of Vietnam in France and the Vietnam Cultural Center in France, organized a series of cultural and academic activities to honor the legacy of President Ho Chi Minh. The events marked the 115th anniversary of young patriot Nguyen Tat Thanh’s departure in search of a path to national salvation (June 5, 1911 - June 5, 2026) and the 80th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s state visit to France as the guest of honor of the French Government (1946-2026).

In her opening remarks, Le Thi Phuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh Relic Site at the Presidential Palace, emphasized that France occupies a special place in President Ho Chi Minh’s revolutionary journey. It was there that he discovered the correct path to national liberation and laid the foundation for Vietnam’s struggle for independence.

The highlight of the event series was a thematic exhibition retracing the activities of Nguyen Ai Quoc - Ho Chi Minh in France through a rich collection of photographs and archival materials. The exhibition illustrates his journey from aspiring to find a path for national salvation, to advocating for the rights of colonized peoples, pursuing dialogue for peace in 1946, highlighting the significance of the 1973 Paris Agreement, and showcasing the enduring value of Ho Chi Minh’s legacy in today's Vietnam-France friendship.

Vietnamese Ambassador to France Trinh Duc Hai affirmed that France holds a unique place in the revolutionary career of Nguyen Ai Quoc - President Ho Chi Minh. His years of activity in France played a pivotal role in shaping his political thought and leadership, enabling him to identify an appropriate path to national liberation for Vietnam while connecting the Vietnamese people's aspiration for independence and freedom with the progressive values of humanity.

According to Ambassador Trinh Duc Hai, the life and legacy of President Ho Chi Minh continue to symbolize patriotism, humanitarianism, and the aspiration for peace - values that remain highly relevant to Vietnam in its current stage of development.

The Ambassador also highlighted several sites in France associated with President Ho Chi Minh that have been preserved, including Montreau Park in Montreuil, the Ho Chi Minh Space at the Museum of Living History, the commemorative stele in Sainte-Adresse, and the commemorative plaque in the port city of Marseille. These sites symbolize the friendship between Vietnam and France while reflecting the respect of the French authorities and people for President Ho Chi Minh and the historical relationship between the two countries.

As part of the program, the organizers introduced the bilingual Vietnamese-French photo book Nguyen Ai Quoc - Ho Chi Minh and France, jointly produced by Vietnam News Agency Publishing House and the Ho Chi Minh Relic Site at the Presidential Palace. The publication features nearly 300 archival documents and photographs collected from archives, museums, and libraries in both Vietnam and France, as well as contributions from historical witnesses within the Vietnamese community in France. Arranged chronologically, the book retraces Nguyen Ai Quoc - Ho Chi Minh’s activities while highlighting his role in laying the foundation for the friendship between Vietnam and France.

On this occasion, the Ho Chi Minh Relic Site at the Presidential Palace also received a number of documents and photographs donated by the family of Dr. Le Van Cuu and the family of photographer Le Tan Xuan. These include photographs of President Ho Chi Minh, images taken at the home of Raymond Aubrac and his wife, issues of L'Humanité featuring photographs of President Ho Chi Minh, and numerous materials related to his 1946 visit to France and Vietnam-France diplomatic activities in the years that followed.

Representatives of the Ho Chi Minh Relic Site at the Presidential Palace stated that these donated artifacts not only enrich the archival collection on President Ho Chi Minh but also reflect the deep affection of the Vietnamese community in France for their homeland and their beloved leader. The materials will continue to be preserved, studied, and promoted through exhibitions, publications, and educational activities on Vietnam’s historical traditions.

According to the organizers, the series of activities helps introduce the life, career, and legacy of President Ho Chi Minh more extensively to the French public and international audiences. At the same time, it promotes Vietnam’s historical and cultural values, strengthens the ties between the Vietnamese community in France and their homeland, and continues to foster friendship between the peoples of the two countries.

During their working visit to France, the delegation from the Ho Chi Minh Relic Site at the Presidential Palace also offered incense and flowers at the Ho Chi Minh Monument in Montreau Park and reorganized and supplemented exhibits at the Ho Chi Minh Space in the Museum of Living History. Numerous publications and materials on the life, thought, and career of President Ho Chi Minh were added and arranged, helping to promote his legacy among the French public while inspiring national pride among Vietnamese people living, studying, and working in France.
