The two ministers had a meeting on the sidelines of the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM-56) in Jakarta, Indonesia, on July 13.
The officials consented to increase visits by high-level leaders, and coordinate in organizing cultural activities and exchanges between localities and citizens in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the bilateral diplomatic ties (September 21, 1973 - 2023), in order to enhance trust and the Vietnam –Japan Extensive Strategic Partnership.
They also agreed to effectively implement the outcomes of the talks between Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, which took place on the sidelines of the expanded Summit of the Group of Seven (G7) in Hiroshima last May, especially push ahead with the implementation of the agreement on new-generation official development assistance (ODA), and facilitate Vietnam's access to development assistance packages in high-quality infrastructure and energy transition.
The two sides will also strengthen coordination and mutual support at regional and international forums, including ASEAN-led mechanisms and Mekong sub-regional cooperation.
Since the establishment of diplomatic ties five decades ago, the Vietnam-Japan ties have been growing strongly and substantively in all areas, with high political trust. Currently, Japan is Vietnam's top economic partner, ranking first in terms of ODA supply, second in labor cooperation, third in investment and tourism, and fourth in trade.
Since 1992, with over JPY2.7 trillion ($19.88 billion) in ODA loans, nearly JPY 100 billion in non-refundable aid, and approximately JPY 180 billion in technical assistance, Japan's ODA has accounted for over 30% of the bilateral development assistance capital that Vietnam has received./.
