Vietnam Promotes Substantive Cooperation with West African Countries

During talks with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan reaffirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to its relations with African countries, with Nigeria serving as a priority partner and a key gateway for Vietnam’s presence in the African market. He proposed that the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs continue to play a coordinating role in advancing cooperation in areas of mutual strength, thereby fostering more substantive and effective bilateral relations.
Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar praised Vietnam’s development achievements and expressed Nigeria’s strong interest in expanding cooperation with Vietnam in trade, investment, agriculture, energy, and digital transformation. Both sides agreed to work closely to ensure the effective implementation of existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms in the coming period.
In his meeting with ECOWAS Commission Chairman Omar Alieu Touray, Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan emphasized that Vietnam considers West Africa a key region in its Africa policy and expressed the desire to establish official relations with ECOWAS. He proposed enhancing cooperation in agriculture, peacekeeping, post-conflict reconstruction and recovery, digital transformation, and telecommunications.
Chairman Omar Alieu Touray welcomed Vietnam’s initiative to strengthen ties with ECOWAS and its member states. He agreed to promote negotiations and the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the ECOWAS Commission, laying the foundation for future collaboration.
