On April 18, 2026, at a road junction leading to My Giang eatery along the coast in Thanh Thuy village, Van Tuong commune, authorities discovered and arrested Pham Van Hau, 37, a local resident, while he was transporting a sack containing 20kg of solid material suspected to be explosives. At the scene, Hau admitted the materials were being delivered for sale to individuals intending to use them for fishing. He later handed over another similar sack hidden behind the My Giang eatery.

An urgent search of the eatery led to the discovery of an additional 12 sacks containing about 337kg of solid, lump-like material with similar properties to the previously seized explosives. The total volume of explosives uncovered in the case exceeded 350kg, hidden in multiple locations around the premises. This is considered an especially serious case, as explosives are prohibited items posing major risks to human life, public safety, and the local environment.

Fishing with explosives is a destructive method that causes severe damage to marine ecosystems. Underwater blasts not only kill juvenile fish but also seriously damage coral reefs, destroy natural habitats, and directly threaten the long-term livelihoods of law-abiding fishermen. In addition, the illegal transport and storage of large quantities of explosives always carry the risk of accidental detonation, endangering nearby communities.

The timely joint operation by border guards, police, and coast guard forces highlights proactive and decisive efforts in combating crime at sea. Authorities urge the public to raise awareness and strictly avoid involvement in or facilitation of illegal fishing using explosives. Citizens are encouraged to report violations and work together to protect marine resources and ensure a sustainable marine environment for the future.
