The Covid-19 pandemic has been affecting the life and trade activities of the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic. Despite this, they have been upholding solidarity and supporting each other while implementing meaningful projects to assist their homeland.

According to the Vietnam News Agency, since Covid started to break out in March 2020, the Vietnamese community of over 3,000 people in Cheb, a western border city between the Czech Republic and Germany, was one of the first communities to raise funds to fight against Covid.

Since the first Covid outbreak, Vietnamese businesses and vendors have mobilized 750,000 korunas (VND 800 million) to support local hospitals, authorities, frontline staff and people in Cheb. These prompt and meaningful initiatives are recognized and appreciated by local authorities and the community.

President of the Vietnamese Association in ASIA DRAGON Bazar Dang Xuan Duoc said Cheb was hit hard by the third Covid wave early this year. Roughly 200 Vietnamese in the city had Covid-19, many of whom work at the shopping center.

During the pandemic, the Vietnamese community’s trade activities are heavily affected due to social distancing. The Vietnamese Association, together with the Women Association, Buddhist Association and the War Veteran Association at the Asia Dragon Bazar Shopping Center, has timely encouraged and assisted Covid patients by giving medicines and care services and contacting doctors.

The center’s management board also reduced booth rental prices and provided security service free of charge.

Despite facing challenges due to the pandemic, the Vietnamese Association and other associations at the Asia Dragon Bazar Shopping Center proactively responded to the call from the Vietnamese Embassy and the Vietnamese Association in the Czech Republic to support flood victims in central Vietnam and the Covid-19 Vaccine Fund, hoping to show the sentiments and solidarity between the overseas community and Vietnam.

During his visit to the Vietnamese Association in Cheb and other associations, together with leaders of the Asia Dragon Bazar Shopping Center on June 7, Ambassador of Vietnam to the Czech Republic Thai Xuan Dung recognized the role of the center’s management board and Vietnamese associations in strengthening the bond between the Vietnamese community, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, carrying out meaningful activities to support their homeland and connecting with local authorities and people.

Ambassador Dung hoped that the center’s management board and associations of the Vietnamese community would continue to cooperate with the embassy to foster the friendship between the Vietnamese and Czech peoples, particularly as the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement had come into effect and help the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic integrate more sustainably into the local community.
