VUFO - Embassy of El Salvador Boosts People-to-people Friendship

In the meeting, Nguyen Phuong Nga said VUFO wanted to coordinate with the Embassy to implement activities to cultivate friendship and effective cooperation between the people of Vietnam and El Salvador.

According to Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, though Vietnam and El Salvador are geographically far apart, the two countries have a fruitful friendship. The people of Vietnam appreciate El Salvador's support for Vietnam's past struggle for national independence, freedom, and reunification and nowadays national construction and development.

VUFO looks to coordinate with the Embassy of El Salvador to implement activities to boost friendship between the two peoples. VUFO and the Vietnam Committee for Solidarity with the People of El Salvador will be the focal point to welcome El Salvadoran delegations and people's organizations to work with Vietnamese partners.

The VUFO President hoped that Ambassador Burgo would introduce partner organizations for the Vietnam Committee for Solidarity with the People of El Salvador to further promote people-to-people exchanges between the two sides.

For his part, Ambassador Ruben Omar Orozco Burgo said the inauguration of the Embassy of El Salvador in Hanoi (February 15, 2023) marked an important milestone in Vietnam-El Salvador relations. He believes that the relationship with Vietnam is the foundation for El Salvador to strengthen exchanges with Southeast Asia, and support Vietnam to expand its market in Central America.

The diplomat said that El Salvador hoped to consult experiences and cooperate in economic development with Vietnam. Vietnam and El Salvador both have strengths in coffee exports, opening up room for the two to cooperate for mutual development.

On this occasion, VUFO President Nguyen Phuong Nga congratulated Ambassador Ruben Omar Orozco Burgo on his assignment in Vietnam and believed that the Ambassador would make a positive contribution to promoting the friendship between the two peoples.

13 years of friendship

Vietnam and the Republic of El Salvador established diplomatic relations on January 16, 2010. Up to now, the two sides have signed 5 documents including a joint communiqué on establishing diplomatic relations, an Agreement on visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and official passports, an agreement on science and technology cooperation; an MoU on the establishment of a political consultative mechanism between the two foreign ministries, an MoU on cooperation in agriculture, fishing, and fisheries.

During the visit to El Salvador by Head of the Central Committee for Foreign Affairs Hoang Binh Quan in July 2016 and the visit to Vietnam by El Salvador's Foreign Minister Alexandra H. Tinoco (February 2023), El Salvador proposed the two sides consider early setting up an Intergovernmental Committee.

The countries have strengths and potential to complement each other, especially in agriculture, fisheries, science and technology, and telecommunications. In 2022, two-way trade turnover was nearly USD 116.9 million.

Regarding cooperation on multilateral forums, the two countries maintain coordination and support at international organizations, especially at the United Nations.
