It is widely known for its health benefits. According to Dr. Howard Sesso, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (USA), green tea is a rich source of beneficial compounds called catechins and epicatechins.
Catechins—powerful antioxidants—help fight inflammation, prevent type 2 diabetes, and improve memory and cardiovascular health. This beverage is also linked to several other health benefits, including reducing anxiety, lowering blood lipids, protecting brain health, strengthening bones, and even supporting longevity.

Below are 10 reasons why green tea deserves a place in your daily diet:
Green tea leaves are rich in flavonoids known as catechins. Polyphenols—plant chemicals found in tea leaves—act as strong antioxidants. Green tea is especially high in epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a catechin with anti-inflammatory properties. EGCG and other antioxidants help reduce inflammation caused by free radicals that damage cells.
More than 5,000 studies have been published on the effects of green tea and cancer—ranging from clinical trials to population-based research and laboratory studies. Research indicates that the anti-inflammatory properties of green tea may lower the risk of certain cancers and reduce the likelihood of cancer recurrence.
Several studies suggest that green tea can lower levels of bad cholesterol (LDL), reducing the risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. A 2023 study found that people who drink 2–4 cups of green tea daily may lower their stroke risk by up to 24%.
Antioxidants such as EGCG and other catechins reduce LDL and total cholesterol levels. Green tea also contains heart-protective flavonoids, including quercetin and theaflavins. These compounds help open blood vessels and keep them flexible, allowing blood to flow more smoothly.
Green tea contains amino acids—such as L-theanine—and catechins like EGCG, which have protective benefits for the brain. A study involving older and middle-aged adults found that regular green tea drinkers had a 64% lower risk of memory decline or poor concentration—nearly 20% lower than those who drank black tea.
Another study on individuals with signs of cognitive decline found that green tea reduced biomarkers associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
A meta-analysis of 17 studies found that tea consumption may protect against osteoporosis and reduce the risk of fractures. Findings show that EGCG and other polyphenols in green tea can strengthen bones by improving bone density and reducing age-related bone loss.

People with type 2 diabetes—or those at high risk—may benefit from drinking more green tea. Research shows that the high L-theanine content in green tea may help prevent diabetes. Other studies indicate that green tea improves blood sugar levels and enhances insulin sensitivity.
However, drinking green tea with added sugar can counteract these benefits by raising blood glucose levels, especially when consumed with large amounts of sweeteners. Choosing unsweetened green tea is recommended.
Laboratory studies (not yet conducted on humans) suggest that green tea polyphenols—particularly EGCG—may help prevent benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Findings indicate that EGCG inhibits the growth and enlargement of prostate cells. More research is needed to confirm this effect in humans.
L-theanine in green tea helps reduce stress and anxiety. Chronic stress often leads to high blood pressure, poor mood, and sleep disturbances, and negatively impacts overall quality of life. L-theanine moderates the stimulating effects of caffeine while improving cognitive function, mood, and focus.
With about 30 mg of caffeine per 200 ml cup, green tea contains less than one-third the caffeine found in coffee. This amount provides a gentle midday energy boost without causing nighttime sleep disruption. The lower caffeine content makes green tea a smart choice for those trying to reduce caffeine intake.
Many of green tea’s antioxidant properties contribute to softer, healthier, and more youthful-looking skin. Polyphenols in green tea help increase collagen production and skin elasticity, reducing wrinkles and other signs of aging.
Some researchers believe that catechins in green tea may help break down body fat and boost metabolism, contributing to weight loss. A recent study in South Korea found that women who drank four or more cups of green tea per day had 44% less belly fat compared to men who drank tea.
Both fresh and dried tea leaves can be used to prepare green tea, but dried tea may lose about 14% of its catechin content. For this reason, fresh green tea leaves are considered the best option.
