At 10 p.m., after dropping off a passenger at Mien Dong Bus Station in Ho Chi Minh City, Trịnh Trường Giang (29, from An Giang) cracks open a bottle of Number 1 energy drink to recharge and stay sharp, ready to take on another one or two rides before calling it a day.

During the day, Giang works in a food company’s warehouse. At night, he hits the road as a ride-hailing driver to earn extra cash. Though his main job covers basic needs, rising living costs and a home loan mean he needs the additional income to support his family.

“I’ve been driving for about a year now. The job is flexible — if I have to work overtime, I drive less. On free days, I drive more. If I’m exhausted, I can just take a break,” he says while sipping a Number 1, waiting for the next ride request.

His daily routine is tightly packed. After his warehouse shift, he rushes home to wash up, eat dinner, and then heads to the Thủ Đức wholesale market area to start driving again, often until 11 p.m. On busy nights, he stays out longer and earns around 200,000 VND per evening after fuel costs.
