Vietnamese Ambassador to the Republic of Austria Vu Le Thai Hoang and Tobias Lang, Director of the Austrian Centre for Peace.

Austria has actively contributed to UN peacekeeping operations since 1960, deploying more than 100,000 military personnel, police officers, and civilian staff to over 100 missions, mainly in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

The Austrian Centre for Peace, under the Austrian Ministry of Defence, was established in 1982 and focuses on research cooperation and training in peacekeeping and mediation with numerous countries worldwide. It has been awarded the title “Messenger of Peace” by the United Nations and the “Peace Education Prize” by UNESCO.

At the meeting, Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang emphasized that Vietnam consistently pursues an independent, self-reliant foreign policy of peace, cooperation, and development, while diversifying and multilateralizing its external relations. Vietnam remains proactive and active in international integration, strengthens defense and security diplomacy, and participates effectively in UN peacekeeping operations.

Vietnamese military officers began participating in UN peacekeeping missions in 2014, while police officers joined such missions starting in 2022 in Abyei, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan.

Vietnam’s Law on Participation in United Nations Peacekeeping Forces came into effect on January 1, 2026.

Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang noted that Vietnam attaches great importance to international cooperation in general, and with Austria in particular, in training and capacity-building for peacekeeping forces, especially in foreign languages, professional skills, specialized peacekeeping knowledge, cultural understanding, international law, and the application of technology to meet UN standards.

Tobias Lang expressed his impression of Vietnam’s sound policies, remarkable efforts, and encouraging achievements in participating in UN peacekeeping operations within a relatively short period, thereby enhancing the image and credibility of a peace-loving Vietnam that acts responsibly within the international community.

With its extensive experience and network of reputable experts and instructors, the Austrian Centre for Peace stands ready to cooperate with and support Vietnam in organizing training programs tailored to specific needs (such as survival skills, climate change adaptation, capacity-building for female officers, and the application of technology in peacekeeping operations), as well as courses and seminars on mediation and conflict resolution in international contexts.

Tobias Lang expressed confidence that cooperation between the two countries in the field of UN peacekeeping holds significant potential and should be further strengthened in a substantive manner, thereby contributing positively to global peace, stability, and sustainable development.
