The Ho Chi Minh City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese (OV) Affairs on December 5 organized a conference on work for Vietnamese people abroad in the category of experts, training, and labor export.

The conference aims to bring effective solutions when sending workers abroad to work.

Vu Thi Huynh Mai, chairwoman of the organization, said that sending workers to work abroad contributed to creating jobs, increasing income, eliminating hunger, reducing poverty, and socio-economic development of the locality particularly and the country in general.

This activity also helped promote the image and good values, culture, and people of Vietnam to the international community.

"After returning home, many people continue to participate in the domestic labor market with responsibility, capacity, and high skills," Mai said.

However, according to Mai, during business trips to the Vietnamese community in foreign countries such as Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, she found that the connection between the Vietnamese diplomatic agency in the host country, the state management agency on labor export in the country, and labor export companies in the city is not effective.

The management and protection of citizens, and the preparation of information about the host country's culture and society for those preparing to go are not complete and effective.

Overview of the conference.

Information on the situation of employees working abroad illegally, violating the laws of the host country, quitting the contract or not returning to the country when the contract expires is informed to the management agency.

The capacity of some organizations and businesses to send workers to work abroad is also limited and does not meet requirements.

The Chairwoman of Ho Chi Minh City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs hopes that through this conference, an effective and sustainable communication and cooperation channel will be established between diplomatic representative agencies, state management agencies organizations and businesses in managing and protecting the rights of Vietnamese workers and experts abroad.

The conference also helped delegates learn and research the situation of Vietnamese workers and experts in the host country, the difficulties and challenges they are facing as well as opportunities to improve and enhance programs and projects related to labor export.

At the conference, knowledge and experience were also shared to create the best conditions for the city's employees and experts to advance and develop in foreign markets.

Huynh Le Nhu Trang, vice director of the municipal Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, said that in the city, there are currently 70 businesses licensed to operate services to send workers to work abroad.

Before 2020, on average, businesses sent 10,000-14,000 people to work abroad each year.

In the first 11 months of 2023, 8,583 people were exported for labor. However, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, from 2020 until now, the number sent to work abroad has decreased sharply.

Average monthly income is from VND15-28 million (US$619-1155).

Most workers are untrained and unskilled workers do simple jobs. The number of workers with intermediate degrees or higher is not high.
