On April 20, 2026, the Chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee issued a decision to establish an interagency task force to inspect efforts against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

According to Decision No. 1547/QD-UBND dated April 19, 2026, the task force is headed by a leader of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, which serves as the standing body of the provincial Steering Committee on IUU prevention. Deputy heads include representatives from the provincial Police and the Provincial Border Guard Command.

Members of the task force include representatives from the Department of Home Affairs, Department of Justice, Department of Science and Technology, Provincial Inspectorate, Sub-Department of Fisheries and Seas and Islands, Fishing Port Management Board, Sub-Department of Quality, Processing and Market Development, as well as representatives from People’s Committees of communes and wards with fishing vessels and the Phu Quy Special Administrative Zone.

The task force is responsible for advising and assisting the Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee and the provincial Steering Committee on IUU prevention in organizing inspections, supervision, and evaluation of how agencies, units, and localities implement the European Commission’s recommendations on combating IUU fishing. It will also promptly identify shortcomings and limitations, provide guidance for corrective actions, and recommend sanctions against organizations and individuals failing to fulfill their duties, thereby affecting the province’s overall performance.

The task force will also carry out other duties as directed by the Prime Minister, the head of the national Steering Committee on IUU, and relevant central ministries and agencies. The Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee has assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to develop operational regulations and plans; advise on inspection and supervision; coordinate information sharing; and propose handling of violations within its authority.

The task force operates on a part-time basis and will dissolve itself after completing its mission. It is authorized to use the seals of its respective agencies and units to issue documents of the task force.

Lam Dong Province was formed through the merger of Lam Dong, Binh Thuan, and Dak Nong provinces on July 1, 2025. Prior to the merger, only Binh Thuan had a coastline, while the other two provinces were entirely inland. In December 2018, the Binh Thuan Provincial People’s Committee had issued a decision to establish a Steering Committee on combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in the province.

Le Tuan Phong, then Vice Chairman of the Binh Thuan Provincial People’s Committee, was appointed head of the committee. Deputy heads included leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (standing deputy), the Provincial Border Guard Command, and the provincial Police. After the merger into present-day Lam Dong Province, Le Trong Yen, member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee and Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, was assigned to oversee IUU prevention efforts in the province.

According to the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee, as of April 10, 2026, the province had a total of 8,200 fishing vessels. Of these, 8,200 vessels (100%) have been registered and updated in the Vnfishbase system; 7,432 vessels (90.63%) hold valid fishing licenses; and 768 vessels (9.37%) are not eligible for fishing activities, a decrease of 21 vessels compared to the previous reporting period.

Management of the fishing fleet, as well as monitoring and supervision of vessels operating at sea, has been strengthened to prevent violations in foreign waters. Vessels that do not meet operational requirements have been reviewed, listed, and strictly controlled, and are not allowed to leave ports for fishing.
