Combating IUU Fishing: Sustainable Path for Ha Tinh Province’s Fishery Sector

Recently, the Economic Security Division of the Quang Tri Provincial Police coordinated with Nhat Le Border Guard Station and the Sub-Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance of Quang Tri province to conduct a maritime patrol aimed at preventing illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, in line with the goal of removing the European Commission (EC) “yellow card” warning.

The inspection team used Fisheries Surveillance vessel KN-614-QB to patrol along coastal routes, river mouths, and fishing ports in the northern part of Quang Tri province. Over three days, the team inspected 53 fishing vessels, focusing on registration, inspection certificates, fishing licenses, vessel monitoring systems (VMS), and crew qualifications.

Through the inspection, authorities detected two violating vessels, including cases where the operator lacked a captain’s certificate and crew members were not listed in the crew register, with total fines amounting to 5.2 million VND. Strict handling aims to deter violations and improve fishermen’s compliance with the law.

In addition to inspections, the working group disseminated the 2017 Fisheries Law and regulations on combating IUU fishing, guided fishermen in maintaining VMS, recording fishing logs, and ensuring the safety of rescue equipment.

Enhanced communication, patrol, and monitoring efforts have contributed to preventing violations of fisheries resources, vessels operating in the wrong zones, and at the same time affirmed the presence of functional forces, helping fishermen feel secure to continue fishing and safeguarding national sovereignty over seas and islands.

In the coming time, the Quang Tri Provincial Police will continue to coordinate with relevant forces to maintain regular patrols, strictly handle violations, and work toward removing the European Commission (EC) “yellow card” warning against Vietnam’s fisheries sector.
