Quang Tri: NPA/RENEW Safely Destroyed The Large-Caliber Artillery Shell
Major Nguyen Thanh Vinh, Head of Trung Hai Commune Police, said the artillery shell was discovered by local people while digging land to make a new fish pond. Commune police instructed people to temporarily stop work and mark the location of the explosive while waiting for support from the demining team.

After arriving at the scene, NPA/RENEW team leader Hoang Kim Chien directed team members to move the artillery shell from the aquarium for safe disposal.

Currently, NPA/RENEW, with support from the US and Norwegian Governments, is continuing to carry out activities to overcome the consequences of mines and explosives in Quang Tri.

After the war, Quang Tri was the locality that suffered the most severe consequences from bombs, mines, and unearthed explosives. According to data released by the Vietnam National Mine Action Center in 2018, the area of land contaminated by land mines in Quang Tri is up to 82%, the highest in the country.

NPA's Survey and Clearance Program is implemented at Project RENEW, funded by the US Department of State and the UK Department for International Development, and is a collaborative project between NPA and the Quang Tri Department of Foreign Affairs.
