UK's weather forecast

A series of low pressure systems are "barrelling in" from the Atlantic throughout the week bringing unsettled weather to the country, forecasters say. New weather maps from WXCharts suggest a deep freeze is set to grip the UK with temperatures expected to fall over this weekend with as much as 14 inches (37cm) of snow falling in Scotland on Saturday according to the maps.

Low pressure is predicted to push easterly winds into the UK during the first part of February, bringing snow and sharp winds with them. Eastern Scotland is expected to be blasted with 18 inches (46cm) on the first day of next month, the latest snow depth models from WXCHARTS show. The charts show the east of the country turning purple to signify deep snow, which could deepen by Monday, February 8, as 23 inches (59cm) could settle on the same region.

While nearly three inches (7cm) of snow will also fall as far south at Peterborough on the same day. Temperatures are expected to plunge to -7C in parts of northern Scotland while the mercury will be as high as 8C in London.

At the same time, the Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for severe snow on Thursday and Friday in parts of northern England and Scotland.

On Friday, snow will fall as far south as The Pennines with up to one inch (2cm) expected with highs of 12 inches (32cm) in the Scottish Highlands.

However, temperatures will increase in most areas as milder air moves in from the Atlantic, causing a "battleground" as it combines with colder air in the north.

Parts of southern England and Wales could see "spring-like" weather, with temperatures rising as high as 14C whilst northern parts will see lows of -1C.

Going into tonight, most of Northern Ireland and areas in northwest England could see flooding as 20-30mm of rainfall is possible while the rest of the country will experience mild but wintry conditions.

Met Office forecaster Tom Morgan, added: "More milder conditions are set to move in from the Atlantic on Wednesday evening and will lead to a sort of battleground with the cold air in the north. This will cause some of the rain and snow which will impact areas across northern England and Scotland."

Mr Morgan also said those in Scotland and in areas around the Pennines will see heavy snowfall lasting until at least Friday.

He added: "Those travelling in snowy conditions should be wary of disruption to the roads and public transport, as much as 20cm could fall in the worst affected areas so people should be careful."

"Temperatures will be close to 0C in the coldest regions, while parts of southern England and Wales could reach spring-like temperatures, even as high as 14C. So there's quite a disparity depending on where you live".

Forecaster Jo Farrow at Netweather said: “Low pressures are just barrelling in from the Atlantic all week.

“There is milder air to the south but still cold air holding on in the north which brings the likelihood of snow on the leading edge.”
