Vietnam Airlines announced on July 9 that it would officially trial the IATA Travel Pass – a digital health app – on two flights, both with the code VN301, that depart from Narita Airport in Tokyo, Japan, to Da Nang on July 15 and 23.

This test run aims to operationalize the cooperation program between the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Vietnam Airlines, according to the agreement signed in May between both parties.

To join these flights, entrants must be over 18 and receive certification of negative Covid test result from the medical facilities registered with the IATA. To secure a slot, passengers can register on Vietnam Airline’s website at least 3 days before departure, download the IATA Travel Pass mobile app to their smartphone, register an account and enter their flight status and Covid-negative certification.

As the app is currently in development, passengers must show their test result in hard copy in accordance with the requirements of their country of arrival.

To help passengers use the app more easily, Vietnam Airlines has uploaded a guidance with illustrations on their website.

At the final stage of the trial, passengers conduct a survey to help the IATA and Vietnam Airlines improve customer’s experience when they use the app.

The first passengers who complete the survey on Vietnam Airlines’ IATA Travel Pass in July will receive the Titanium Vietnam Airline Golden Lotus membership card. A total of 30 cards will be distributed.

IATA Travel Pass is considered the first stage in establishing Vietnam’s “Covid vaccine passport.” Currently, the mobile app is being tested in many countries with its outstanding feature to ensure consistent data between the government, testing facilities, airlines and passengers.

The passengers’ journey will become more convenient when all information they need about the requirements in their country of arrival are updated regularly, allowing passengers to manage and share personal information safely.

The app incorporates top digital solutions such as non-contact tourism, biometrics and electronic health certificate which includes Covid test results and vaccination. IATA Travel Pass is particularly convenient and effective in that it can replace current procedures requiring various documents.

The digital health passport officially entered into effect for European Union countries on July 1, 2021, allowing free travel within the union and international travelers.

Vietnam Airlines hopes the trial of the IATA Travel Pass, if successful, will become a basis for the government to recognize the mechanism, gradually reopening international flights in the future.

In addition to Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet and Bamboo Airways are actively partaking in testing the IATA Travel Pass.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has requested the Ministry of Transport to report to the relevant authorities on deploying the initiative to resume regular flights to Vietnam as soon as possible.

Currently, Singapore, Panama and Estonia have officially approved the use of the IATA Travel Pass upon entry. Over 30 airlines across the world have announced their engagement in testing the app, such as Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways.
